Ashlenelouise
Hi, as it states in my bio I live in preston, Lancashire, uk recently there have been many many stabbings, gun raids, drug raids and even fatalities through violence, i know I can research this but as I was already on PP I thought I would ask.. Is there a lot of crime in perth? Are some areas more 'prone' to these sorts of things? Just wondered what it's like where you guys live ? Preston on used to be lovely and I've lived here all my life but as any other city it appears to be more gang related crime happening, just the other day an 18year old was stabbed numerous times in the street and 7 men have been arrested for his murder .... Just seems a shame shame and a scary place nowadays xxx
Plimthing
Crime is increasing here in Perth and surrounding areas. We ( my suburb, not me personally) have had kids beaten in parks, guns waved at schoolkids from cars, security guards stabbed in shopping mall, car theft, house theft, wierdos trying to get schoolgirls in cars, bodies on beach to name a few . I believe the Islamist extremists are on the increase too, with a few arrests being made at airports recently as they were off on their one way trip to Jihad Butlins. So as lovely as it is to be by the Indian Ocean sipping beer/wine on your terrace listening to the waves crash on the beach you can guarentee that somewhere up the road someone is having there gear robbed out their car. Sad but true. On a positive note, petrol is cheaper.
Ashlenelouise
Ahhhhh seems live even in the other side of the world it's still the same ... Sad really but I guess it's just what it's like nowadays xx
portlaunay
Not experienced anything like the crime we had in London. Since we've been here we've had our car rummaged through (I never lock it so I'm not really counting that as crime), we had our house broken into at 6.30 one Sunday morning but I tried to catch him so he only managed to get Mrs p's handbag (mostly empty), then this morning her office was broken into and her computer stolen. An hour later the cops called to say they'd caught him and recovered everything. We don't see or hear of much crime. I never watch the news because I find it sensational, exaggerated and don't much care for what goes on outside of my bubble. I think it depends on where you live, there are supposed crime hotspots but Freo seems safe.
Akasully2
I did my degree in Preston many moons ago. Can't imagine it being like that. Our reg hang out was the Adelphi pub and the night club just into town. (The Event?) Never any trouble from memory apart from drunk students being a bit loud (yes, that included me). As for where we live now (Hillarys), I feel very safe walking around, everyone seems friendly and I have never felt threatened or uncomfortable. The worst I have seen was a gobby hoon mother screeching off at a rediculous speed from a car park with her unruly kids shouting out in glee (mini hoons). I get the impression most people don't set their house alarm or bother locking their garages. We seem to be seen as overkill on safety. I haven't seen gangs of kids in hoodies or felt intimidated by any 'youth'. Again, all the ones I see have been pleasant. I'm sure scumbags are out there but thankfully I haven't seen any. Guest Guest6235
As been mentioned before on here it maybe gets exaggerated as there isn't that much of it. It's one reason we preferred NZ as there isn't a lot of bad crime. The owners of b&b's where we stayed said whatever crime there was got exaggerated to fill up news space & mainly had to fill the news with stories that wouldn't even get into the English or American press as it was so menial. One owner of a b&b in Christchurch where we stayed was from America & he said things that made the news was laughable. There were reports of gangs in certain parts, but they usually had trouble between themselves. There was an old lady we stayed with in Kaikoura and she had never locked any of her 5 doors into her house, something we found weird, especially when all our cases were in the room etc. I know it's not Perth but maybe along those lines. portlaunay
My favourite front page headline here was "Man threatened by neighbour with trowel!"

I'm literally too scared to walk down the street at night now ... The poor lady near my house had her house broken into at 1800 in summertime whilst she was upstairs bathing her two small children ... Crime in preston at the minute is horrendous ... Im im obviously expecting some crime when I get there but .... Just imagined it would be a bit quieter ... And I could actually feel safe ... I suppose I should make my own mind up when I get there .... Thanks guys xx

Akasully2
@Akasully2 We lived about ten steps away from the adelphi Sully! in moor lane above a dentist, from 1995-1999, we're you there then?? Tokyo joes was the night club we frequented! small world How funny! No, @beandownunder I was there earlier than that (showing my age) and the nightclub certainly had a different name. The pub was run by a smart older man and his very camp, dyed black, haired boyfriend. One night they had a private fancy dress party upstairs above the pub with the theme 'Close Encounter'. My friend and I dressed as aliens, spent ages making outrageous outfits made from tin foil and proudly walked in wearing them (we were art students, so we had a lot of creatively and plenty of double sided cello tape to utilise). We walked in and was viewed with disgust by the camp one as his theme Close Encounters was meant to be the 1940's classic about unforfilled love at a train station and not 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' which was a SCIFI movie!!!! In true style we laughed our heads off and just mingled, tweed next to tin foil. Had a hoot. What made it even more delightfully revengeful was the fact we found the guys black hair dye in the bathroom and confirmed he wasn't such a natural, spring chicken after all! Arh, those were the days...
odies
my friends BIL got his car stoned in Balcatta in the shops he told the yobs off and got hit, lots of rubber marks on certain roads , made by idiots with nothing better to do. I listen to the news and nothing like news at ten and nothing like when I had a 3 week job in Texas, gunshot through the window, caught a plane home 2 days later. I hate going to my local town centre, which I go rarely, as the entrance to the shopping centre has every nation standing outside.I think most cities in the uk have their rough no go areas unfortunately and long for the escape to the country days.I know Perth won't be perfect but you do not have to drive or pass through the bad areas to get somewhere like you do in the uk. ali
Wow it's like a Preston reunion - I lived in Walton-le-Dale, no place is crime free, I still reminded my kids of stranger danger, we lock our doors etc., but it doesn't feel as bad as when we were in the UK. verystormy
Statistically crime is about the same as the UK though individual crimes level vary. Some are more prevalent here and some less. Drugs are a major issue. In the 2012-13 year there were over 250 illegal drug labs discovered in Perth. Given the amount discovered will be a tiny proportion of those operating it means there is a huge amount of drugs being manufactured.
