Kandsdowunder
Hi, I am looking for Some opinions and advice about salary expectations and how much people need to get by. We are in the process of applying for perm residency in WA. We have friends who moved out years ago, he was a mechanic and she didn't work. They got by on his wage. He is retired now and so can't give me up to date salary figures for light vehicle mechanics in WA. Can find salarys for diesel mechanics but no info on job sites for light vehicle mechanics. Currently work at Jardene land rover in the south of the uk and will be bringing out about 60k. Can someone, especially any mechanics tell me what my salary bracket should be? Il be coming over with my wife and 2 kids. We are happy to live further out from the beach and city as long as it's a doable journey to the beach especially. We have visited friends in Kinross which we loved bit also thought about Ocean reef or joondalup. Will my job be enough for us to live off? We should be eligible for child and rent help but don't want to assume or overly rely on this! Any ideas of salaries and/or living on this wage would be great. We love it over there and will be emigrating to WA either way but would like to build up a realistic picture. Anyone who works as a mechanic, It would be great to hear how you find it or how you feel the wages are in terms of getting by, thanks Keith

Deb
Its a lovely area you are thinking of moving to got friends that way. Would not know what money you would get but someone will. Good luck with everything. You will have plenty of money to get you started. When you hoping to come out.?
nikkiwd
Hi, I can't offer much advice about wages but I would say you will need a salary of minimum $70000 per year for your family and if you have PR then you should get help with rent and family benefit if you earn below a certain amount. Ocean Reef is a pretty expensive suburb to live but it depends on your income as to whether you can afford to live there. Most of the suburbs on the beach side of the freeway are a bit more expensive due to being closer to the beach. There is a user on here that posts jobs occasionally, have a search for SkilledMigrantJobs and maybe send a private message.
Druid
My work colleague son is a freshly qualified motor mech, light vehicle mechs are getting anything between $40-75k year, heavy diesel mech more, there are some jobs advertised at $30-$32 / hour, that puts you at about $60k, not a good salary for Perth, I arrived and started on $75k and that was a struggle with the wife out of work for 8 months the rent was half of my take home pay

Thanks for the friendly response, asked similar question a while ago when we were thinking of south oz and posted on the adelaide poms website and the posters were really negative about everything in general to the extent that someone private messages me and said they no longer posted the forum due to the constant negativity from people! So thank you for being friendly!! We are hoping to come out when fate allows- waiting for visa to get sorted and then have to sell the house and then we will be there! Are you able to recommend any other areas which might be less expensive. I don't mind not being really close to the beach, as long as it's drivable! Think the main thing is to find a reasonable rental for us, when we originally started looking into oz, WA was originally ruled out as most rentals seemed to be 600 a week but they seem slightly less now so hopefully we will get something within our budget when we get there. I think we may have to look into my wife getting some sort if part time job to help out

I think we may have to look into my wife getting some sort if part time job to help out If you want to be North then look at Clarkson, Butler Quinns Rocks, they are a couple of miles further North than Kinross but the rental prices come down remarkably, the rental prices in Kinross and neighbouring Currambine and very reasonable at the moment, unless you really go out into the sticks like byford and Armadale you not really going to do better
nikkiwd
I think that Padbury, Heathridge, Beldon have reasonable prices but not sure what the areas are like. We are just the other side of the Freeway in Kingsley and pay $490 for a 3x1. Its 10 minutes to the beach. Prices have come down quite a bit in the last year and you can actually offer less than the asking price on some rentals. If you don't need to be near the city for work then like Druid said you get a lot more house for your money up Butler way.
Kandsdowunder
Thanks for all the advice, from my research, other parts of oz seem to pay between 50k and 60k for mechanics but just can't seem to get any figures for WA, I may try and email some garages and see if they can give any wage figures. Just want to prepare my self! It seems with pr we should get about 500 per fortnight for child benefit and rent assist if the salary figures in perth are similar to south oz or Queensland which will be a great help but wasn't sure if my wages might be higher than that if in WA as from what I can gather things are just generally more expensive there. So if any light vehicle mechanics see this thread or you know of any please do let me know so I can budget, pm me if you would prefer! travelchic
Hey, I live in Beldon, 5 minutes from the beach in 2x1. I earn less than $60k and manage to put about $500 a month away. There is only 2 of us, 1 adult 1 child, but there are other rentals in my area that are the same price for 3x1. I only work part time and could earn more if I worked full time but I came here to be able to spend more time with Jonny. So for me the extra time at home is more valuable than the extra money. I find that if your willing to look around at prices before you buy things like petrol, food, clothes etc then its not really more expensive than the UK. We manage ok and we're happy. dxboz
Wow Debs 10 out of 10 I don't know how you do it! Kands I would not give up your life to come and see what I would think is struggle here - gone are the good times - Perth is now in a recession - and cost of living is very high think carefully about what you are doing - the grass is not always greener - used to be - not now
Kandsdowunder
Thanks for the advice :-) hopefully a liar mechanic will be able to tell me about wages at some point. If they do only pay 50-60k, which by the sounds of things we wouldn't survive on, I just wonder how other mechanics deal with this as there must be some that have young families and therefore one person has to stay home and they live off one wage. Perhaps they live life the way travelchic does which actually sounds quite similar to our life at the mo!!

Have looked on gov website and it says we could get about $550 a fortnight which would be a great help!
