Monthly Bills (Again)

Recommended Posts

This isn't like the other threads! I am trying to do a spreadsheet so I can get an idea of what we can expect. Can anyone confirm how close these figures should be. I know everyone is different but we are looking at a 4x2x2 with Myself, my wife and three kids.

Rent: $2,350

Foxtel: $75

Mobile Phone x 2: $100

Car Insurance:

Gas: $75

Electric: $90

Food: $750

Fuel: $150

Water: $75

Broadband $50

Rego: $35

Contents Insurance: $30

Medical Insurance: $335

Now I know not all of these are monthly, but for the benefit of my spreadsheet they are. So if you wouldn't mind giving me some idea of how close they should be and also if there is anything I have missed!

Rent could be less depending on where and what you rent. Where we are most people pay $2k per month or $450 pw.

Food can easily be more than $750 per month. It's not that you couldn't do it for that but I think most families spend more like $1000 per month.

Mobiles can be cheaper if you get a PAYG sim. We pay $30 per 4 weeks and this lasts us when we have internet at home.

We don't have Foxtel as we find that the top box gets us 30 channels for free and I find TV better over here than the UK.

Gas, I would budget slightly more. We haven't had a bill yet but our neighbours was $330 for 91 Days.

You'll need to pay registration and at insurance. We have a new Kia Sorrento and paid around $700 registration and $440 insurance.

Depending on how much driving and or commuting you do plus what car you get your fuel costs may be more. I fill up every other week and it costs me approximately $75 but I only use the car for the odd school run and to get the kids to activities. I share lifts with other mums which cut my fuel costs by half. My OH gets all his fuel paid for by his work.

Hope his helps.

Lou

Hi we are a family of 5 and your figures dont look a million miles away from ours, obviously where you live will make a big difference to your rent cost (and also actually your food bill as prices do vary between areas!) here is my breakdown of your list:

Rent: $2,350- we pay 2400 pm

Foxtel: $75- we dont have it

Mobile Phone x 2: $100- we pay 2x$30 so $60 total

Car Insurance: -was about $400 ish for the year so $35 ish

Gas: $75 -ours is a bit less at around $60 a month (but it changes through the year and we have no gas heating or anything)

Electric: $90 ours varies from around $100 to $200 a month (but we have no pool or air con or heating)

Food: $750 We spend around $800 a month, but I try to be really careful with what I spend

Fuel: $150 we spend about $200 a month, but only run 1 car and hubby uses public transport / peddle power to get to work and I only work part time and walk the kids to school

Water: $75 something around this, but more in the summer when we have to pay to water the grass to keep it alive in our rental (again no pool etc)

Broadband $50 Ours is aroun $100 a month, that is just broadband not a phone.

Rego: $35 (sorry cant remember that one)

Contents Insurance: $30 ours is about $50 a month - again depends where you live and what you are insuring!

Medical Insurance: $335 ours is $170 ish a month but it would depend what level of cover you want / need as a family.

Other things you might want to include are school costs (even for gov schools you pay a contribution) this will deped on the age of your kids and school uniform (it aint cheap!)

Hope that helps!

you may get your insurance a little cheaper. We pay 210 a month for 2 adults and 2 kids. As Lou says, mobiles an be cheaper if you shop around and look at payg sims etc. Make sure your mobiles (if you plan to bring them over ) are fully unlocked, we had a few nightmares with ours. We pay $150 a month for foxtel, home phone (inc bills)and broadband (100gb). Gas will be more in winter months, we just had a $390 bill for 3 months ( i think). If you shop around for food, you can get that figure down quite a bit, don't fall for the uk trap of buying everything from the same shop ( eg a weekly shop at tesco's), you will soon discover which shop is better for what products. Petrol is cheaper over here so use the savings in that to drive around and save on your shopping. Before the tree huggers jump on me, i drive a 1.8L ford focus, so i probably produce as much CO in a week as most 4X4's do starting up in the morning.

Anything else i can think of i will let you know.

Oh yes, Beer is quite expensive, but it is the law to drink in OZ so... choose your poison carefully! $24 for 4 cans of Boddington's.. OUCH!

Rent $490 per week for a 3x1

$800-$850 ($200 per week) on food and thats shopping at farmer jacks or spud shed carefully

phone/broadband is $79 per month with iinet

Mobile payg $60 (2x$30 top up)

Fuel is around $250per month

Electric was $250 for 4 weeks, ouch! (and we had no aircon or electric heaters on)

Medical cover $187pm for family of 4

Gas was around $90 for a month

Car insurance was $420 for the year

haven't had bills for water yet and can't remember other things.

So around $4k a month or a grand a week there or thereabouts on average. Not that bad........

no not that bad, but also remember that isnt actually 'doing' anything if you want to go to places it will cost you in petrol and costs (depending on what you want to do) people easily spend $100 on a day out (possibly just on entry fees depending on where you go!) and eating / drinking out is expensive. It all depends on how you want to live and what you want to do, there are lots of free things that you can do. I would also budget a 'treat' every so often (take away, day out etc) if you dont do it, then you will feel great for having saved a bit, but if you dont budget it in you may feel frustrated that you cant afford it!

It's just like here in uk. We take my daughter to one of those indoor play centres and if she was over one year old it would cost her a fiver....sometimes she has had enough after 20 mins so it would be a waste. Also we were looking for somewhere to go for a day out last week and the place we saw would have cost us an arm and a leg, some of the activities were outside, so again would have been a waste if we had gone as it threw it down.

Depending on your kids ages, you'll also need to include costs for books and school equipment. This is usually around $200 per year. Of course they'll also be the cost of the uniforms which can also be around $200 depending on which school they go to and how much uniform you choose to buy them.

Also think about the kids activities. On average activities here are approximately $10-12 per session, be it swimming lessons, judo, gymnastics etc etc.

The parks and beaches here though are fab so if you wanted you wouldn't need to spend any extra money on a day out with the family

Thank you all for you replies. Its helped a lot. As for the kids, currently Jack - 12, Sophie - will be 11 and Oliver who is 3.

We are looking at Canning Vale, Harisdale and Piara Waters area and ideally a 4x2x2 which all seem to be around the $550 a week mark. We can live without foxtel im sure.

Now need to see how much we can sell here in the UK to raise some more funds as finding a job from the UK is proving difficult as many have said on this forum.

Hi there. My bills are a bit lower than others because its just 2 of us, 1 adult 1 child. Here goes...

Rent $400 per week for a 2 bedroom in Beldon.

Phone and internet from iinet with 100GB of use $59.90 per month.

Foxtel $75 per month for movies, kids and entertainment. This was free for the first 3 months. After my first 3 months are up i'll be ditching the movies as we don't really watch them.

Water rates. I got my first bill which was only for 3 weeks or so and it was $9.90. They told me this equates to 48c per day. We have no pool or grass. Bonus.

Electricity came in at $330 for a 2 month period. This includes about 10 wash loads with tumble drying included. We also had an electric heater on a lot in the evenings. In fact we don't have gas at all so the bill is not that bad.

Fuel. I drive a Ford Focus 2004 and it costs about $70 to fill it. This lasts me 2 weeks and I drive to Mount Lawley 5 days a week which is approx 60km round journey. I also look on the motormouth website to look at fuel prices in my area as it can be $1.33 in one garage and $.48 in another.

Food. I shop mostly at spudshed, make all of my meals from scratch and buy things in bulk when they're on offer. I spend about $100 a week for the 2 of us and this includes all packed lunches, cleaning products and toiletries. I freeze a lot.

Child care. I pay $20 for morning care and $25 for afternoon care but I get half of that back from the government. I don't think that is means tested but don't quote me on that.

My mobile phone is the only thing that I think I could have done better with. Its $79 per month but its a fab phone and I love it.

Wine. Now we're onto the important stuff. I go to Dan Murphys and buy my favourite wines which are Gallo white zinfandel $7.99 and Brown Brothers Cienna $12.99. In the UK the Gallo cost me about 7 quid and the brown brothers cost me about 9 quid so its actually cheaper here. Brucey Bonus!!!!!

  • 1 month later...

Hi folks,

Does anyone have a copy of straighttothepoint's spreadsheet they could send me? I contacted him but he can't send it to me for a few weeks so he said it was ok to ask on here. Also, he said he did a word document compiling a list of useful websites.

I think it's great the level of information you can get through here! Thanks everyone.
