portlaunay
So one of the reasons we wanted to come here was to be able to explore SE Asia in the same way we were able to enjoy Europe from the UK. For the past couple of weeks we've been planning our latest trip and in the hope that it might provide inspiration to others I thought I'd share. In a couple of weeks the four of us fly from here to Hanoi via Singapore. We have a day and a night in the city before heading out to Halong Bay where we're sailing for two nights around the bay on an old junk. Back into Hanoi for another couple of nights then we have a sleeper cabin booked on the train from Hanoi to Hue where we spend another couple of days before we move on to Da Nang for a day or so. We then catch a flight with White Knuckle Airlines to reach Saigon for the grand finals and a few days in the capital. Another flight takes us up to Siem Reap where we want to see Angkor Wat and then another rickety old plane takes us down to Phnom Penh. From there we all fly to Bangkok and Mrs p will fly on to Nepal for a week and we come back home. The total cost for flights is around $4k and the trip around Halong Bay is another big hit at $1k but the total cost for the rest of the trip; flights, trains and accommodation is less than $2k. most of our accommodation is pretty basic, staying in B&B's with only one hotel booked but that's only $80 a night for two rooms. We haven't yet booked the train from Hue to Da Nang and we're tempted to see if we can buy an interesting mode of transport in Hue, miss Da Nang altogether and drive down to Saigon but Mrs p is understandably less enthusiastic than myself and the kids. We made the mistake of not getting all of our jabs before we left the UK and I'd strongly advise trotting along to your GP to get your tropical vaccinations before you come otherwise you'll need to add a fair few $$ to that cost. So, for those who share a spirit of adventure and a similar itch then whatever life is like for you in Perth, it does provide an excellent base for exploring this side of the planet and it's certainly more affordable than doing it from the UK. Plimthing
Sounds good Port! I like the sound of the Internal flights! My kind of adventure. I fancy just trotting round random pacific islands, see the sights, sample the local nosh and firewater and take some photos for the fading memory. The RAF only bought me as far east as Diego Garcia so i thought i could do all of this side of the 'ball' while im here. If i can go east a bit further until i meet up with LA then ive done the whole way round. Still trying to build my Mrs up for when we leave OZ, to buy a decent Land rover and drive home from Singapore. Don't know why, but she's not up for it yet...its only 17000km's

When you go, you gotta organise some kind of jaunt to end it on a high. I'd like to go back into Europe via Sth Africa and ride up but there's no easy route that way now either without a few twists and turns. By the time i go the israeli's or US would have turned middle east to glass and i guess the russians would be too busy taking on NATO to notice my Landy or VW kombi chugging on by! Tad too much Ebola in Africa for me to want to go that way! Might go through Turkey and up through former Yugoslavia. I love that place. elfie
Plimthing, I work on times with a gentleman who lives in Calista. He is a 101 years young mind as sharp as a razor slightly frail smokes and smokes a pipe. He and his wife drove to Australia in 1970 in a series 1 original landrover. His route across from the UK via Turkey ect from Singapore via ship to Cains he then drove the top end down to Perth took him 7 months. The the stories and photographs he has are amazing spend many an hour with him recalling his stories. He is a keen radio ham but alas he dosent use it as much now as all his friends over the world have died and he is afraid of being made fun of with the youngsters as he calls people. He is truly one amazing gentleman. Hubbs and I have also toyed with adventure of driving back up to Darwin to Singapore Malaysia Thailand who knows where life will take us ........ portlaunay
What jabs do you require @portlaunay and how long do they last? Sounds a fabulous trip! We had tests for Hep A+B immunisations but neither of us had (the kids have). So, we needed those as a fast track combined jab, Tetanus booster and Typhoid/Diptheria. I think the Hep and Tetanus are 10 years and the Typhoid only lasts three before a booster is needed.
cutchibear
Thanks @portlaunay I wonder if you get them free here? If so, its definitely worth considering like you say.
portlaunay
Thanks @portlaunay I wonder if you get them free here? If so, its definitely worth considering like you say. Even if you have to pay, it's unlikely to cost as much. We are able to claim back a chunk of it from Bupa but it's still a lot of cash.
