English Rose
Hi all, Well we are getting closer with our visa being granted. I have a daughter who is 6 and in year one in UK. I think we will be flying our first or second week of November. Going to get a holiday home and then look around suburbs to decide where to rent. i am not sure whether to start my daughter in school this year as I guess they break for holidays in December. I don't want to make her worry by starting a new school for a few weeks then break. But then on the other hand it may help her by getting a taster. I just wondered what your thoughts are whether it is worth it. Also, when do they break and then go back to school?? thanks all Jo x
Walkabout
Hi, we landed here on the 11th Nov last year so know exactly where you are coming from. My main aim was to have seen the schools open and have made a decision before the christmas break. As it worked out we found the school that we wanted and the kids really wanted to get stuck in so they started before the end of November. For us it helped them as I think they were finding the not knowing hard, at least it meant that they knew where they were going to be going and a bit of what it was like so they could not worry about it and enjoy the summer holiday! mine break up on the 18th or 19th December and I think go back on the 3rd Feb (ish from memory) Good luck! janh
Hello.we arrived 4 weeks ago just before their 2 week break and had similar uncertainties..our daughter is 6 and had finished her year 1. As soon as we got here we found a school and she started within 2 days of getting here which helped her to settle and make friends before the Hols.i think structure is a good plan and the schools are so helpful in settling them in.also means you can get on with the boring stuff while they have fun.if you google term dates for wa you can find exact term dates. She went back to year 1 which has helped her confidence too as she had covered some of the work already
Guest Guest13452
I don't have kids, but I am a teacher, so if my two cents is worth anything, here it is! I think that structure will be good for her. It will give her an opportunity to make new friends, which is extremely hard to do as a child outside of school. It will also give her a chance to meet people to meet up with over summer. If she doesn't start school until the new year, she will have this whole term and all through summer without school mates, which seems like a long time. It also means that you don't have to work to entertain her this term! School is good. It's hardly a chore when you're young. It's enjoyable Give her that chance, I reckon

If she turned six after June 30th, then she will be in pre-primary (still full time) and will go into year 1 next year. If you already know where you will be living and have a long term rental, then it is a good idea for her to start soon after you arrive, if not, then it is important to know that schools have catchment areas and will only let children out of the catchment area enroll if there is space. It would be a shame for her to start at one school and then have to move. Edited October 9, 2014 by Sammy1
