JenPen
Hi guys! Well as you know we have always looked at NOR and mainly Duncraig and surrounding areas…..However we have both found potential jobs around Rockingham area - somewhere we haven't really visited yet….I just wondered (I know it is personal and individual what we all like!) but could you tell me a bit about the area if you live there, what is around, schools etc and the pros and cons from your point of view from living there ands being "so far" from the city of Perth…. I have looked at Suburb profiles etc on google and things but I am someone who likes to hear it in person Thank you everyone!! xxx
elfie
Think you have to visit to find out for yourself really and see it through your own eyes not someone elses. Theres all the amenities you need good link via train line to Perth if you crave city life. Theres good and bad every where depending on the area. As for schools cannot comment. I am further down again in Secret Harbour and to be honest would moved even further down again and most possibly will come March. Myself do not mind Rockingham again depending on the area. There are lots of nice areas to live plenty of parks and the foreshore is ok calm safe beach for children to paddle and swim. Lot of development in forthcoming years apparently. A Marina in Mangles Bay and more restaurants etc it has been compared when development is done to Manly. There are a lot of pros and cons regarding the development from the public permission has been granted but there is a lot of opposition. I didn't get to see Rockingham but hubby has and he said its quite nice from what he remembers haha!! won't be able to visit again before we move so that won't work….guess when we get there we will have to look around the areas SOR a bit more! Deb
We love Rockingham, no kids so dont know a lot about the schools. I have looked at them for my daughter and they seem ok.. Love being near the Beach. Plenty of shops around, plenty of eating place and lovely parks. and the train takes you to most places.Think its about 40 min into Perth.Takes us 25min to get to freeway though.Mangle bay been passed so there is plans for eating places and I think a marine.New hotel been built so plenty for the future

Guest Guest13452
I've lived in Rockingham, then when I left to be closer to Perth I still worked in Port Kennedy for years. It's a lovely area! Nice shopping centre. Great beaches. You can escape to the bush for great hikes and it's only a short drive away. There are a couple different train stations which run to Perth. Close to the freeway, which can take you north to Perth, or to the glorious southwest. The greater Rockingham area is definitely on its way up. Much less bogan than when I lived there nearly 8 years ago! There is also a fairly high number of UK expats who live in certain areas in Rockingham. 'Pockets', if you will. Port Kennedy is a great area just south of Rockingham. It's not a separate entity, it's connected by suburbia. Secret Harbour is just south of that, and that a little more isolated (still a pretty big suburb with shops though), which is great for families if that's what you want. Great beach there too. Lou8670
We live in secret harbour. I'm not a fan of rockingham in general but there are some nice bits, the foreshore and Warnbro sound are lovely. As @Deb says, there are plans to build a new marina like Hilary's with shops and restaurants etc. if I want to go shopping I don't choose to go to Rockingham and prefer to head to Garden City or into Perth. Rockingham, Warnbro and Port Kennedy can change from street to street as to whether I would want to live there. I love my suburb though and it's handy for Mandurah and Rockingham. Great for the kids too. In the area there are loads of things for the kids to do and clubs for them to get involved in...cricket, surf life saving, swimming water polo, cricket, soccer, afl, rugby, gymnastics, judo, karate, dance, scouts, camp (after school and over night camps in the school holidays).... The housing is more affordable down here; you can buy a house for around $400k. Secret Harbour can be a little more depending on which part you buy in. Best thing Jen is to come and have a look but feel free to PM me with any questions
JenPen
Thanks lovely that's really helpful. Been looking at housing and it does seem much cheaper but I will definitely have to have a look at SOR more I think....glad you're settling in well xx
jen140977
we have moved to warnbro 3 weeks ago, we have now secured a 12 month rental here. we like the shopping centre and rockingham beach which isn't too far. Warnbro seems a little cheaper to rent which has been vital for us at the moment until we secure jobs. It looks like the local state schools aren't great but we are putting our girls into the local private school close to our new house. We had never been to Oz and don't know anyone, advice on this sits has been invaluable. We have travelled to perth central on the train 4 times, very quick and cheap for a family pass. Every one is really friendly, parks are great, kids are mixing with our girls. So far, everything is going well. PM me if you want any help, Jen
JenPen
Thanks Jen! It seems warnbro seems quite nice and that area rather than central R itself so to go a bit further SOR pays off! We would like to look into private schooling but also not sure money wise yet what we can afford. I'll definitely PM you lovely if ok and get some more insight etc thanks!! Catch up soon Jen x
Sal
Duncraig has one of the top ten State high schools. High schools in Rokingham are some of the worst. Depends how old your kids are and if that's a factor.
JenPen
Thanks Sal - I think I am going to stick with my gut……I had really researched Duncraig and happy with it all - my children are 2 and 5 - will be 3 and almost 6 when we move so having good schools is very important to me as this will be our forever home I hope!!
