SteelCityBrickie
Hey all. New poster to this forum. I arrive in Perth April 8th (bricking it if I'm honest - I'm traveling alone). 12 month WHV. 28 years old. Brickie. From Sheffield. Looking for as much information as possible from as many people as possible. What can I expect? Should I do hostels or house share? Wheres the best place to stay for someone my age who likes a bit of nightlife? Will I get a job in construction? how much is a beer? any other Sheffielders on here? As much info as possible would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance, Matt.
verystormy
Hi and welcome to the forum. It is a first world country. You will be arriving in our autumn so more pleasant temps. I would look on gumtree for house shares. I would look at fairly central areas. If you want to be in the middle of it all, then Northbridge. Yes - there is a huge demand for brickies and you will have no problem. Beer. Ah, now the issue. First, if you are a lager drinker, then you are fine. If an ale drinker. You will weep. But not as much as prices. Expect to pay $10 and then rising upward in the more trendy / young / popular bars and $15 is not uncommon - $15 is about £7.50. SteelCityBrickie
Thanks for the reply and the way you broke it down. Obviously I'd prefer being on the bricks but appreciate beggars can't be choosers. Where do you recommend to aim for construction wise? Is there any particular area with a higher demand or is it spread out? i drink cider mainly (bit of a sweet tooth) but lager is a decent substitute. £7.50 a pint! Ouch! Best find work sharpish then it seems. I I guess by 'more pleasant temps' you don't mean the high 30's like it is now? I don't mind the sun but Christ that's warm!! verystormy
You will get bricklaying work pretty much anywhere out of the CBD. Buy the local newspaper - The West Australian on a Saturday and you will see loads of jobs for brickies. Yep, it is warm at the moment lol. By April we should be in mid 20's and falling. Bring a a waterproof coat and some jumpers as July and August can be cold on a night.

It's currently between 2 and 8 degrees every day (has been for the last 3 months and I'm getting fed up of wearing 3 jumpers for work). I'll risk a long sleeve top of it's all the same. Like to think I'm made of sterner stuff. can i buy basic tools out there? Stuff like a bricklaying trowel, spirit level, tape measure? I can probably fetch a tape measure with me mind. Only a fiver if I lose it or it gets taken. Cheers for the help. I'll be back for more! Matt.
verystormy
Yes, winter can get very cool - though mainly only on a night. Day time temps will be mid to high teens, night can get to low single figures. Yes, you can buy all tools here.

swimwiththedolphins
Hi Verystormy We are just in the process of applying for our Visa. We have family in Mandurah and after research have decided that we'd love to settle in Dawesville. It looks amazing. Would you recommend it? The property there seems really good value compared to some other areas! Thanks Michelle
