gar374
So we're looking at mid July for the move and intend to have a furnished rental short term until we can find a nice place to rent long term (unless by chance we find somewhere to buy very quickly). How long have people taken to find their longer term accommodation when they're arrived? Is 2 weeks way too short? Is four weeks too long? As usual, all help and advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance G

ali
We took a 12 week rental (remember this is years ago) and we bought a house and moved into it during the last week of the rental. I think it depends where you want to live and the availability of rentals, friends took 4 weeks holiday rent, they wanted to rent in Leeming and were pushing it to the wire getting a rental in their last few days, others have got a rental in other areas within a week. I'd advise about 4 weeks, takes a little of the pressure off when you're trying to sort everything else out.
portlaunay
I think it'll depend on where you're looking to stay, whether you have jobs to come to and what you like doing. What's the situation you're in?

gar374
good point - more info is always helpful. No jobs to come to. I work in IT so expecting to get something in the CBD or SOR. We're planning on living SOR but not sure where yet. My mum lives in Rockingham, and we like the areas between there and Mandurah, so the usual, port kennedy, secret harbour, but open to suggestions. Definitely prefer coastal (I don't need to be able to see the ocean or anything, but a 15 minute walk or less to a nice beach would be awesome). And there are 4 of us. Me, Gareth(39), Ellen (redacted), Emily (20) and Danny (5) so primary schools will be a consideration. Ta G
cutchibear
We've got a rental for 3 weeks in Kingsley - figured it will hurry us along to find somewhere quickly!! Fingers crossed!
DangerousDave
We've got an 8 week rental, mainly because we have no jobs and no idea where we want live even though I been to Perth a few times. I guess we will be doing a lot of driving around in the first few weeks.
Padchitchat
Hi G we came over in jan this year and booked in at the Atrium in Mandurah we booked in for 5 weeks but only needed it for 3 before finding rental no cancellation fees or anything ,also very good base for the area and somewhere to have a bit of family time in evening with indoor pool and Bar !! And your only 5 min walk from lots of Restuarants Which allways helps .just remember its a bit basic but hey its only a bed for the night and the trade off is most off the friendly staff are local and can give you some good info on the area an schools.Good luck with everything. FOL
We had a rental for 3 weeks initially. But we stayed with friends, so we cancelled it. Anyway, took us 2,5 weeks to rent a house, so we would have managed.
katesunflower
We are staying in a shared house in Melville, the lady here is lovely and really friendly and has given us loads of help and advice, we booked it for 2 weeks. Originally we wanted to move to Bibra lakes after coming in 2013 for a reccy, but when we arrived couldn't find a suitable house and decided the area was not for us. A couple of days ago we started looking into different areas and liked Leeming, we have secured a rental today and move in next week. If you are lucky 2 weeks is ok to find a rental if you start looking straight away, but rentals are not always what they seem, the pictures and descriptions make the accommodation sound great, but in reality this is not always the case. Most of the rentals that we viewed had tenants in, so it can be hard to visualise what it would be like without all their stuff. Rentals seem much easier to come by than 2 years ago and I've heard the prices have come down as well. So out of 6 viewing, 3 had others families viewing at the same time. Someone on this site was asking about furnished rentals, I've not seen one of those, only unfurnished. I'm really happy that we stayed in this studio, its idea for new people coming to Perth. Good luck to everyone finding rentals, just stick with it and something will come up.
