SJT
Hi No sorry it's not like that here, they are very big on swimming though and most schools at the start of the school year put on a swimming carnival but held at the local high school/public swimming pool, but every year they do two weeks of swimming every day. There are lots of swimming clubs/lessons around and you will easily be able to find a swim school near to where you live. Whne we got here my daughter hated swimming and could only do basic stuff, now she is in swimming squads and swims twice a week, and I know lots of people have joined swimming clubs and compete at weekends so there are plenty of options for when you get here. By the way I'm talking about public schools, I don't know what private primary schools are like for swimming in school.
waynel
As well as the two weeks swimming with school there are vacswim programs available which are very cost effective, especially in summer when there are classes in the sea. http://det.wa.edu.au/curriculumsupport/swimming/detcms/navigation/vacswim/#toc3
