verystormy
I would say there has been very little change. The beach where I live is only patrolled on weekends in summer. But, at first light this morning there will still be surfers there. LMany surfers still surf beaches that are not patrolled.
SJT
On Friday evening at about 4.45pm, when the sun was just going down there were hundreds, and I mean hundreds of surfers in the sea at Scarborough, I have never seen that many surfers in one place since I have lived here, obviously the swell was good and I don't think any of them were thinking about sharks and there was not one life guard on patrol. There are always people swimming out quite far, paddle boarders out really far and the kite surfers go out even further. I think if you are brought up here you do not give it much thought, but as an adult I find it quite daunting and only ever paddle, but I have always been like that. On a Sunday during the summer every life club have their childrens life saving stuff going on and there are literally hundreds of children swimming out quite far into the sea and staying out there for a bit. So I think it depends on your own mind set. We were on Trgg beach once and a shark came in chasing a dolphin, the guards were straight onto it, the alarm went off, the sea excavated and then everyone watched the drama unfold, it was quite exciting, obviously not for the poor dolphin. newjez
Sharks. Serious question, has the 7/8 deaths in the last few years affected the way you treat the ocean now? When we lived in NZ, the kids were keen bodyboarders, we had a family jetski, I surfed, mainly on deserted and unpatrolled beaches, obviously surfing at unpatrolled beaches in Perth would be lunacy, but do people still go in the sea in Perth? and I mean past their ankles !! We cant wait to arrive, but the beach was a massive part of our lives in NZ, when I look at half the houses on realstate.com.au you could hardly tell half the people live near the ocean, no signs of boats, jetskis, surfboards etc. Every second house in NZ had a boat. Any views? Has the 1000 or so deaths on the roads stopped you from driving or changed the way you drive?

Jack Bauer
'Has the 1000 or so deaths on the roads stopped you from driving or changed the way you drive? ' Not quite the same is it? But yeah I use greater caution at night time when there are loads of drunks on the road.
