Mark11
Does anyone think that emigrating to Australia in your late 40s is to much of a risk or not? I am a bricklayer who is considering the move to Perth and wondered also what the working conditions were like especially in the summer months? Any info would be appreciated. verystormy
If you are over 45, you are unlikely to qualify for a visa anyway. Although the formal cut off is 50, there are no age points awarded from 45, so for the majority of people, it is impossible to get enough points after age
duffieldtowers
I came at 45 in 2011 (that was the cut off age then). I came on a 457, I gave up a 25 year career and an "old Cheshire" brick des res to live in a mates back room in Wanneroo. It was a HUGE risk, especially as in 2011 there were more jobs about. Thing is, it was last chance saloon, do it then or spend a life time wondering what if. We came with nowt, lost a fortune in the UK. Happily its worked out. If you have the opportunity and the cash.... Good luck
Paddymacs
We are 40 & 42 and going without jobs you only live once!!! Worst case scenario it doesn't work out and we come home we are keeping our home here. We keep saying we would rather be saying in a two years well at least we tried it but hoping we will say thank god we did that it was the best move ever! Bristle
Mrs B was 45 (don't tell her I said so) and I was 48 when we arrived in Aus. Neither of us had jobs but found work within 2 months. I was made redundant at the start of December and am finding it difficult to get a job as a Sales Rep at the moment. We love being here and have no plans to return as it would probably be hard for me to find a suitable job in the UK.
pegg
like the "Dr.Pepper" adverts …………." whats the worst that can happen " ???
verystormy
Sorry guys, you are all ignoring the main issue - the CURRENT rules, mean he wont get a pr visa. The OP could attempt to gain a 457 and hope that they agree to go on to sponsor, but as most brickies are self employed, that looks unlikely
Mark11
Thanks for all your positive comments, looks like there are a few of us in are 40s who still want to emigrate. I have a permanent resident visa which expires in a sixteen months time so got to make a decision soon. Think it's a good idea to keep your home in the UK until you know you are going to stop at least then you would have some where to return to. Does anybody know what the job market is like for bricklayers in Perth and is it much different to bricklaying in the UK? Thanks again. duffieldtowers
If you have a PR Visa, you can change from bricklayer to something else. Right now the exchange rate is in your favour and rents and properties are on the way down. Seems like great timing. If you stay as a bricklayer, can you speed up my build at Alkimos Beach - you can find the details here https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/seven-things-buying-new-house-has-reminded-me-selling-gary-duffield?trk=prof-post Make wise choices and good luck.
