Guest trionacoleman
Hello, I just came across this forum and hope someone out there can help. I am currently in the final stretch of my Nursing degree in Northern Ireland. I am due to receive my registration from the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) in October of this year 2010. I am wondering what are my chances of finding work in Perth as a newly qualified staff nurse? Do I need experience before I can register with the Nursing and Midwives board of Western Australia? And would hospitals be keen to take on someone with no experience? Any information would be greatly appreciated, Kind Regards, Triona.:smiloe:
Guest nomes353
Hi Triona, Im Naomi and originally from Dublin. I moved out to Perth in October 09 straight after finishing uni. I had already organised a job, you will find that many places are willing to take you on, WA is the only state that will though so good choice in Perth!!! I started applying in Jan 09 which gave me loads of time to sort everything out. You dont necessarily need any experience although some hospitals will make you do a grad programme (just a rotational prog that all new grads have to do, you will be working on the wards and being paid), although Im not doing one. I suggest you start getting your cvs out and see what kinda response you get, thats what I did. Hope this helps. Any questions, feel pm me Naomi
Guest jimmybhoyd
Hi Triona. My wife and I came over here at the beginning of the year on a 457 long stay business visa. My wife is working in Graylands Hospital and was also offered a job in Bentley Hospital. She has been qualified 2 years but like someone else noted these hospitals are still looking to take on freshly qualified nurses but put them on Grad Programme. There are Grads who work in my wifes workplace and earn the same money. She applied for both positions through a company called Ransdstad (www.randstad.com.au). Contact the Perth office and ask to speak with Peita who is the overseas specialist as they helped us complete visa application, met us at airport, they done loads for us. You will get a job no bother and as you will be a fully qualified Nurse you will secure the job from the UK as it's a telephone interview which is conducted. You may also be entitled to apply for a moving package entitling you to much needed $ from the Western Australian Health Board. Again Randstad can give you information on this. I hope you get success and get to move over here as it is a lovely city. Good Luck and all the best.

Guest elaineg
i am a nurse too, WA born and bred. registration with the baord is after completion of your degree. once you have your Irish registration you need to apply to the WA board, and that will soon be a national registration. once accepted you need to go through all the process of applying for visa etc. i know that nursing is one of the needed occupations here still so i would send applications to all the major teaching hospitals in Perth and also some of the more remote larger centres such a Bunbury, Port hedland, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie. Perth, despite popular belief is not the only place in WA. WA is HUGE and a lot more than Perth. if you apply through a recruitment agency it costs the employer huge sums and limits who you will be available to. we have graduate programmes here and they are hard sought after, but, as a junior nurse, you would be supported. Guest sammy.n.andy
Hi Rhian how long have you got left on your midwifery course? I guess it depends on where you want to live, North or South of the river, I live South and they are just building a great new hospital right near me. It going to be called the fiona stanley hospital, there are a few other hospitals around here: kaleeya, Rockingham, Armadale, Bentley, King Edward memorial, .(They are all Public hospitals) Murdoch/St John of God are private. The main one for you would be King Eddies as the whole hospital is women and children or Kaleeya. As you have children it might be easier for you to come on a 457 if you can get one of the hospitals to sponsor you. Usually the hospital does the application for you and pays all of the fees, another option to get here quickly is to come on working hol visas, and put your children on student visas so they can attend school. Then once you are here apply to hospitals for sponsorship. You cant apply for sponsorship without having a sponsor, the immigration website is really helpful and has a visa finder you can use. www.immi.gov.au If you have any questions you can email me, I did mine and my hubbys residency application and I am currently doing my mothers parents visa application. So I have a little bit of knowledge of the process. Good luck with the whole thing

clairej456
Hi Sarah1990 I am a qualified nurse in the UK, I have 4 months so far and am currently applying for skills assessment then a visa. I have heard there have been changes with AHPRA and the need to have a degree which at this moment I do not have. Is it easy enough to do a top up course in west Australia and then gain registration whilst there? How much experience do you require for jobs with your company?
