Possible Spanner

Recommended Posts

We leave a week today, I have had a Skype interview which has seemed to have gone quiet well, job not confirmed and a little way off, we are based from Ocean Reef for 6 weeks and kind of got it in our heads that we would like to live around Quinns, Butler Jinderlee area and the fact my wife knows someone who lives in Duncraig and when we was over in November we stayed in Kallaroo and my wife liked the North, is he ever going to get to the point I hear you say.......

Well the point is my wife is already fragile on the who move thing and it turns out the job position is based in the south, now do I swallow the bullet an commute daily which I am not adverse to already or while we are doing our look around do we spend some time in the south that is not that far to get North ( recommendations please), as from the suburbs listed already we are looking for a modern style property's and we have a young family so good schools also important.

I am going to look for jobs in the North when we land its just the one that is still only a potential I would not need to retrain and could go straight in at 130k + benefits, super car etc etc rather than being on trainee money for 6 months +

hence the problem.

so any recommendations for a southern base that I can take my wife to with modern housing and good schools not too far to get to dun craig, okay think that's it thanks in advance

I guess I will have to see if I get the job, the job Is a supervisors role covering the southern areas, will be in various areas over the south so was thinking maybe secret harbour or safety bay? no idea what the areas are like as we didn't look when we was over in November, I know Lou is in Secret Harbour but not sure if she is about much these days.

What about Hammond Park??

Its a lot nearer the city than the suburbs you mention, but v handy for the freeway, but if you need to get to the more industrial areas of SOR, you have the option of Stock Road too.

The Cockburn area has a lot going on, upgraded shopping centre, two large hospitals, train station, plus another station going in soon, in Aubin Grove. Pubs and restaurants nearby.

Although inland, its only about a 15min drive to the lovely beaches of Coogee and Woodmans point.

As others have said, I wouldn't want to do a daily commute NOR to SOR .

Hi Jason

I've just come on and seen you're message. Of course you've already got my reply to your PM.

I also wouldn't recommend commuting North to South. From 5:30am the traffic builds and doesn't clear until about 8:30am. It's pretty bad around Berrigan Drive going north and south at the moment because of all the road widening.

Secret Harbour is lovely as well as some of the suburbs nearby (like Singleton, Madora Bay, Meadow Springs...there are lots of new houses going in and you'd be able to afford to buy a lovely home here with the budget you indicated you would have) but it would be a commute if you were covering immediately south of the river as it can take 30/40 mins from here to clear the other side of Berrigan Drive. Saying that though my hubby drives into the CBD from here every day. It usually takes him an hour.

I'd suggest sitting down with your other half and prioritising what you want out of the move. Then when you get here look around areas and be harsh...see how many of those boxes you can tick and if there are some you just don't want to untick! We wanted to be close to the beach as we were from Jersey and were spoilt for choice for beaches only 5/10 mins away but you may have completely different priorities to us.

Don't hesitate to ask to meet up if you decide to look around my area. I can show you around and meet you and your wife for a coffee or lunch if you want. Everyone's very friendly and helpful here because most of us have been in your situation.

Good luck!

Lou

My son commutes to Welshpool each day , takes around 1 hour, we took the train journey to beautiful Mandurah it took 1 hour 25 mins.

We went around different places yesterday and ended up trying to get on the freeway at 4.30 at Leederville, it took half an hour ! so much traffic, however my son remarked he just joins the motorway from Welshpool no problem, taking him the hour to get home. Don't know if that helps but the houses are a bit cheaper south too. However what you have could get you in a lovely area north.

Mandurah - a city in its own right, has a number of great suburbs. Many are coastal and it is very much a water based city. I would recomend a look.

Advantages are are it is cheaper than the northern suburbs. On the train line, so easy to get in the city. Blocks are bigger - a lot of the suburbs in the north have blocks so small the areas remind me more of terrace houses. Half way to Margaret river. Affordable to live beach side. Lots of interesting places near by such as Dwellingup and state forest. The city of Mandurah is very pretty - it's foreshore is bigger than Sydney harbour. The weather is a bit better - we are normally 3c cooler in summer and 3c warmer in winter.

Thanks all for the advice, we are going to have a good look around. Good job we have 6 weeks in the holiday let really. Alot will depend on the job and if I get it. Saying that I could be offered a nice job north when I go looking. When I spoke to the OH last night she said about being near the person she knows and I understand as we know no one and will be support for her. Lou I will come down for a day to look around the south so I will pm you. VS if we do come to Mandurah I will give you a shout to see if your free. Thanks again all.

So many decisions...it truly is a journey...make sure you go with your gut and what is right for you and your family and not what everyone tells you you should do! Good luck!

I agree with this so much - always get from other family members where we should live in WA but not once have they ever asked what WE want from living there.....x

Hi Jason,

Just come across your post while looking for info for my daughter.

I have been living in Seascapes, Halls Head which is a suburb of Mandurah for several years now.

It's a fab place to live, my children attend a great school, many services on the door step and a good community feel ( lots of friendly uk mums here )

Whether you decide to live north or south, just find a suburb that has good facilities for your wife to access as this will help you all settle into your new lives.

If you find you need to live SOR and need any assistance drop me a PM.

Cheers J
