pegg
Hi all, So after Soo many years and then finally thinking we will apply for permanent residency visa ……… I have now been offered a job under a 4 year 457 sponsorship with hospital , and been told i can apply for PR once been there 4 years or they can consider sponsoring me for PR after 2 years ???? My head is spinning , ive got the degree just waiting on ilets results on friday …… Also if i have a job to go to - do i need anmac or do i go straight through aphra ??? So many questions!!! - So , if any of you nurses out there that have just been through this , i would love advice !!!! please . Also what are the major differences between visas ? The hospital seem to favour 457 - but is this because PR takes to long ??? Sorry for all this randomness - but i know you are all amazing and im sure you can help ;o) Kindest Regards Lisa

ali
I would always go for PR over 457. You have the option of applying for PR at anytime independently whilst on a 457. The PR visa allows the freedom to move around as promotional opportunities arise, I know that some of our advertised jobs where I work for MH will say that preference will be given to PR and Citizens - so you may not be applying for jobs on a level playing field. A friend when she originally came over on a temp visa was told that they would sponsor for PR after 6 months - there was then a freeze put on this and she ended up applying independently anyway. If you have children then you will be subject to additional school fees, if they are Uni/college age then you will be subject to international fees as your status is temporary. I have heard (but don't know of anyone personally), whose spouse has had difficulty finding employment due to the visa. You need to remember that you will not be classed as a permanent employee but someone on a fixed term temporary contract - albeit for 4 years. You do not need the skills assessment for the 457, just Ahpra registration, but if you apply for PR before the 2 years employer sponsored one (or choose to do it independently), you need the skills assessment. I would ask them to write into your contract that they will sponsor you after 2 years if you decide to go down this route.
Lou8670
Always go for PR over a 457 as there are lots of extra costs to a 457 you don't factor...like medical insurance, covering any medical gaps in your insurance yourself, cost of schooling, not able to benefit from first time buyer incentives.... You also have to find another job or leave the country if you find yourself out of work. PR can be done within 3-6 months (obviously depending on how long your skills assessment takes). It's also worth applying for AHPRA registration early as my friends recently took 9 months to come through!
verystormy
There is nothing stopping you taking the 457 and also lodging a PR visa yourself.
