E2306
Hi, Can anybody help with this? We are hoping to move out next year with 4 year old twins and a 2 year old. We are looking to find an area which has good schools and is family orientated. I believe such areas have very high rental costs - is there anywhere that offers both with reasonable rent? Probably a silly question! Thanks ?
Lou8670
Where do I start?? There are so many... and you'll be given so many different opinions on here too. It would help if you could narrow down your search area. Where will you be working? What sort of commute do you want? Do you want to be in the city, countryside or near the beach? Do you like it quiet or busy? Do you want to be near amenities, sporting activities or other facilities? What's your budget? Do you eventually want to buy your own home because there's no point settling somewhere where rents are affordable but when you look to buy you can't afford to buy a property in that area. This can particularly difficult if you have settled children into the local school. There are lots of lovely suburbs with good schools but proximity to Perth, the river or the beach will play a part in determining rents and property values. We're in Secret Harbour. It's not everyone's cup of tea but we like the fact it's close to family, on the beach, has a great surf life saving club, golf club and swimming club, good schools and is 10 minutes to Rockingham and Mandurah. It's 35-40 mins to Perth CBD; longer at busy times, but it I love that our suburb is quiet. I can only hear the sea at night time and not trains, cars or any other noise for that matter... E2306
Thanks for your post. We don't have any jobs lined up yet as we aren't planning to move to next August/September. I am a secondary school teacher and my husband a joiner. Ideally it would be nice to be close to the beach but not so close to incur the massive rental costs. So even a short drive. Amenities, sporting outdoor activities etc would be a bonus. We primarily want good schools for the kids but also an area which offers plenty of things to do with them and obviously be safe and secure. We are initially heading to my brother in law NOR - they are in the process of looking to buy. But that's really our base to find our feet. I have heard the South has become very built up and the North is a better option?? I have also been on the real estate website to see what we can afford but I haven't really a clue where I am looking! We are potentially wanting to buy after a period of renting if everything works out for us
E2306
Do you mind me asking if you have moved from the UK?
Lou8670
I am originally but we moved over from the Channel Islands. We arrived just over a year ago. I'd say north of the river is generally more built up than south although there are lots of new suburbs going in along the Kwinana freeway and also around Mandurah. Many of the newer suburbs are offering smaller blocks than the older suburbs....they are squeezing a lot more houses in now than they used to in order to deal with the increase in population and offer people affordable housing. But if you drive 5 mins inland it's all farmland and countryside. A lot more people now seem to be heading south as property prices are high north of the river. However, I'd say if you have family north of the river and if you want to be near them then focus your search for a suitable suburb round there. There are some lovely suburbs north of the river and if you want a little cheaper you only have to go 10 mins inland. We chose to settle so far south as we have family in Waikiki. E2306
We are certainly happy to go inland a bit...we are moving from the countryside so very used to that type of living and would probably prefer it (although we don't want to be too isolated). We initially mean to start in the North but as much as we want to be reasonably close to family our jobs, best schools and areas for families will influence our search. How have you found living in Perth?
ali
To be honest, I'd wait until you know where you will be working before narrowing it down - no good on setting your heart on living in Yanchep for example to be offered a job in Mandurah and having to up sticks. Some schools are also very strict on boundaries and will no longer accept students if they move out of area.
