Im so gutted, just been told the company I work for is letting people go, last in first out scenario.

As my 489 visa has regional restrictions, I cant find any work where we are and will soon run out of money. Devastated as just starting to settle and make friends.

The wifes the main visa holder, do the restrictions apply to me as well??!!

So upset right now, the dream that took 8 years is being destroyed...

I will do anything to be honest, ive got a bit of experience in painting, coving, tiling, from doing our houses up. Would do apprenticeships, junior roles, anything. Maybe this is the kick up the backside I needed always wanted to do something different.

Really appreciate any help fella, im a hard working, decent bloke.

There are no exemptions for the regional restrictions on a 489 I am afraid.

Sorry, wasn't trying to have a dig - I am in Mandurah as well and I know how tough it is. I was laid off June 2014 and have been trying to find work in Mandurah since - I am sick of fifo and there is not much work for me in mining anyway now, I only got about 3 months of work last financial year.

The unemployment rate for Mandurah is 8.4% - as of 2014, but I would strongly suspect it has got a lot worse since. The unemployment rate for young people is 17.3% - again for 2014

I log onto all of the job sites first thing on a morning. I need a reasonably ok paying job ($60+) and I am lucky if there is one a month advertised.

Though, I haven't had much more luck in Perth! A fair amount of jobs advertised, but I have found most are just agencies trawling for cv's using ads for jobs that don't exist, or when it does exist there is a massive amount of applicants.

MWJW... not good to hear - nothing worse than being made redundant.

Just a thought, but have you considered setting yourself up as a home/garden maintenance guy? I belong to the growing group of single "Seniors", and I am finding that a lot of the home maintenance jobs I used to tackle myself, I can no longer do and need a"Rent-a-Hubby" now and again to help me out. Many of my single friends have the same problems.... there could be a gap in the market there for you to fill. If your work was good and your prices sensible, I am sure word of mouth would work for you. Perhaps draw up some fliers and do a letter box drop.

Hope something comes along soon - just remember "glass half full"! Rossy

Hey Rossy,

Thanks for the advice, dont have any trade qualifications and am useless with a drill!! Can paint and stuff like that though. Have though about starting something like that, its just scary as always had guaranteed work and hours with solid employers, its a big step into the unknown now for me.

I totally understand how you are feeling, but sometimes these blips in life come along just to knock us onto a different pathway and it turns out for the better. Do some research into rates that painters charge, undercut them a bit as you don't have any trade quals, then advertise away on any free medium you can. Another thought, have you considered approaching a decorating business and offering to do work experience? Sometimes this can just get your foot in the door and if they like you and your work, it turn out OK.

You sound a very resourceful and positive thinking chap and I wish you the best of luck.

You say your wife is the main visa applicant, what do she do and is that money enough to keep you ticking over for the time being.

As Rossy says above, a good option is trying to set up by yourself, a lot of people are doing it and if your wife is working then it allows you to get started. In my second month I got chatting to a guy that does turf laying, retic and general lawn mowing and he asked me to help him on some of his big jobs, the days I helped him he paid me well. He told me a lot of people who are losing their jobs, especially FIFO, are setting themselves up doing this type of work, you could just start mowing to start with and it's amazing over here how many people don't do this kind of simple work themselves. I started my own business up doing something else and at the moment i'm ticking over and working around my daughter as we've struggled getting her into full time daycare. I was offered a couple of jobs early days in things that I've done previously but they wanted long hours out of me in one and the other wanted me to start within a week but daycare couldn't turn my daughters place into a full time one.

Hey, shes a qualified butcher but cant find work in the regional areas, so has taken a casual job. We have enough for a month or two, but after that...unthinkable.

Yeah heard from a mate that loads of FIFO's are coming back and filling up jobs everywhere. Have a few ideas, if one takes off will let you know!! Day care is crazy, to be fair same costs in the uk but still something you don't want to pay
