biscuits72
This has probably been asked before and usually creates some hairy debate, but where would you recommend living in the Perth region, North or South? Which had the best transport links? Schools? Affordable, decent housing etc ?

Sal
I prefer West....the CBD is nine k's inland and I believe the hills and East of the city is well liked.
verystormy
It depends on what you want. Both have good areas. A lot more Brits in the north, but housing is slightly cheaper in the south. Depends on where you will be working though.

GaznSal
Or people could just skim over the threads they are not interested in or are bored of and let others ask the questions that they feel they need to!!
ali
This thread should be banned and everyone should be redirected to previous threads! To maintain everyone's sanity! We don't discourage people from asking questions that have been asked before, it can provide up to date information for new members and also an easy way for people to break the ice and ask/answer on the forum. We may also have new members who live in a suburb that hasn't previously been mentioned on the forum, which can be invaluable for those moving here or thinking of a change. The forum guidelines ask that people try to give a descriptive title - that way people can (I assume) not click on it if they think the subject matter will as you suggest have an impact upon your sanity. Lou8670
Sorry @biscuits72; it's just that the question NOR or SOR is such an open ended one and has been asked so many times! It's like asking north or south in the UK...you'll get a whole heap of different answers and entice a whole heap of debate. Generally north along the coast and along the river are more expensive and sought after but it's not to say there aren't other lovely suburbs north and inland, east and in the hills or south of the river. It really depends on what you want, where you want to be and your budget. We decided to go south as we wanted to be near our only family here in WA, near the beach and in a quieter suburb where you get more for your money. My kids are into swimming, surf life saving, rugby and judo and we have some amazing clubs on our doorstep. We've also managed to get them all into one of the top schools in WA so we're very happy with our choice. Perhaps if you indicated what you are looking for in a suburb people would find it easier to point you in the right direction. Good luck [emoji1] Edited August 5, 2015 by Lou8670
Monkey2645
Lou do you mind me asking which school? And is it primary or secondary? Thanks
Lou8670
Frederick Irwin in Mandurah. Kolbe Catholic is also rated highly and locally Mandurah Catholic College is also highly regarded (according to my son). They are all private and are difficult to get into for primary unless you're lucky; I think Kolbe and MCC are secondary only and are fed by local Catholic Primary's. Your chances are better for secondary.

Im looking at South Halls Head for primary, but had considered MCC (they have 3 feeder primaries but I'm sure one of them is their own MCC one) - either way it's picking somewhere in the relevant catchment, though I presume MCC also has the church requirements. Think we'll def go MCC for secondary as the state secondaries seem underwhelming - it's good to get other people confirming that I wasn't delusional in thinking it was a good school!! Thanks

biscuits72
Thanks for all the helpful posts so far. We had South in mind but really don't know any areas yet as we are still in Adelaide. The schools info is great too, another few names to google and research on. Tigerbalm
I like these posts. They were a big help to me when I was trying to decide. North near friends or south near husbands work? We chose south in the end, in an established suburb where the state schools have a good reputation. Many similar threads on here helped us to make up our minds. The girls start school on Monday so we'll see if it was the right choice or not!

Lou8670
Thanks for all the helpful posts so far. We had South in mind but really don't know any areas yet as we are still in Adelaide. The schools info is great too, another few names to google and research on. There is so much choice south of the river. It will again depend on your budget, how far you want to commute, if being near the beach is important to you or not (not many suburbs right on the beach unless you head to South Fremantle, Coogee or further south to Rockingham, Secret Harbour or Mandurah or any of the suburbs in between the last three. Obviously the further south the longer the commute to the CBD if that's where you'll be working (I know many don't). If you just want to be near water then you could look at the suburbs along the river. If you're not bothered about being near the river or beach and just want to be near transport links then look at the suburbs along the train line and freeway like Leeming, Willeton, Jandakot, Success, and some of the newer estates which are going in alongside the Kwinana freeway. One thing I would say though, especially if you have children of school age and you want to eventually buy, is to choose a suburb you can afford to buy in. I've so many friends who have chosen their suburb based on a number of important factors including commute and school rating only to find that, although rents are affordable, they can't buy in the catchment of their school as house prices are too high. They wish they'd considered this when choosing a school as they then have the difficult decision whether to move the children's school again or stay put and continue renting. Bibbs
Either is fine as long as you don't go north of Reid highway, or south of Roe (or east of Tonkin).
Rossmoyne
Thankfully we are all different and desire different things in where we live, so there is no right or wrong answer to this question. I chose south because I came to family and they all lived south. It just seemed silly to travel half way round the world to be near to family and then live on the other side of the city to them. However I think you have to take a lot of factors into consideration, like where you will work, your family's sport or entertainment activities, schools, friends, and if you want city living, suburbia or a more rural life. There is more to the Perth metro area than "north" or "south" - try looking at Kalamunda, Mundaring, Roleystone, which are more rural areas to the east. It is hard to make a decision based on internet research only, as you might think you have found the perfect area for you, only to dislike it intensely when you finally get to experience it. Good luck with your research though as you will have a good base of knowledge to support your final choice.
