emyc468
Hi everyone This may be a really silly question but - we are planning to move over in Feb 2016 and are bringing our car with us. I am currently in the process of renewing our car insurance here in the UK and normally protect our no claims discount BUT is this worth it this time? Do you get no claims discount in Aus and if you do, can proof of it come from a UK provider? Thanks in advance!
gar374
Following this one. we landed a week ago and I bought a car today. Not sorted proper insurance out yet, having a look at that when I'm done here. Hoping my ncb transfers over, have heard it will if you have a letter from your previous insurer. Nic964
Insurance here is optional. You pay for 3rd party insurance with your rego, which isn't great, but it means that you don't have to panic around insurance. We found insurance here is really cheap, we didn't bother with our UK NCB but fully comp on a new Ford Fiesta was only $300 a year. Hope that helps. gar374
Right, so I've now got proper car insurance as well as what comes with rego (which is 3rd party person cover) so not the same as 3rd party in th UK. Options are similar but they seem to have lots of options for covering drivers 21 and over or 25 and over but with higher excesses. NCB was mentioned and the go to 60% discount for 6+ years. As I have a letter from my previous insurer I ticked that box. for info, my falcon xr6 cost under $400 for comprehensive insurance for me and the wife. emyc468
Thanks for that it's really useful to know - I will keep our ncb protected! I was dreading how much it's going to cost for ours but it really doesn't sound too bad - hopefully I will find the same when we arrive. Thanks again
Bristle
Just bought fully comp insurance for OH and myself. We had to state how long we had held licences and whether we'd had any recent claims. When asked about previous insurance held we stated none as I'd had a company car for 20+ years so had no record and my OH didn't have a copy of her NCB from the UK. When the final quote came up is stated that it included a 60% NCB discount. Fully comp+windscreen cover & hire car cover for $300.
odies
if you bring your car over, it is more difficult to find insurance for an imported car, only 2 SGIO and Shannons. It is more expensive too for fully comp. I fell into the trap of going for the cheapest until I rang again and questioned about imports.
