The options come down to sponsored or permanent.

The he sponsored route is very difficult as normally when a company needs to fill a vacancy, it needs it quickly. But the visa can take a number of months. Also, most trades people here are self employed. That is not possible under a sponsored visa.

The he issue with sponsored visas is it is usually a 457 visa. This is only a temporary visa. It is tied to the employer, so if you lose your job, you only have 90 days to find another that is willing and able to sponsor. Note, not every company can sponsor and many won't. if you did not find a new sponsor within 90 days, you would have to leave the country.

Social security is is not available to 457 holders.

There is a fee of $4000 per year for families with children in school fees for 457 holders.

The partners of 457 holders can find it more difficult to find work because they are only temporary.

It it is for these reasons that the 457 route is rarely a good idea for families.

My husband is a carpenter. We got our permanent residency visa a few months ago. It took a long time to come through, but with a young family to consider it is definitely the better option. You do not want to be let go of your job and have 90 days to find another sponsor. Carpentry is still on the list of skilled shortages but in Perth as a carpenter jobs are harder to find as less houses etc being built. For this type of industry I just hope the economy starts to pick up again in Perth for my husbands future.
