So many questions!!! Calling all nurses......

Hi I'm new to this site but have been reliably informed it's so helpful.

We are in the very early stages and have only just contacted an agent to get the ball rolling. The dream is Perth, the reality I have just been told is unlikely.

So, looking at visa 189 with my nursing background. Qualified under project 2000 and have a BSc (hons) in health and social welfare that I did after my diploma in nursing. I have been told by agent that my degree might not be the correct degree and I also need evidence of medicines management linked to degree.....

I'm confused. I don't know why my degree might not be good enough and surely i covered medicines management in the project 2000 syllabus but I don't have any stand alone documentation of it.....

Any help gratefully received....

thanks

Jo.

I'm in a similar situation in that I did my diploma in mental health nursing in 2002, never did my top up degree but have just completed my MSc in health professional education. I am just waiting for my certificate and transcript to come through then I can send off for my skills assessment. My agent seems to think I should be ok but can't be certain. I'm just sending lots of updates I ha e done and other evidence regarding meds management. I will let you know if I hear anything. Have you looked at the criteria on the AHPRA website that might help.

Hi Jo,

I was under the impression that any degree would be ok? But I a, not informed on that am afraid.

re medicines management, I was really worried about that. I rang my UNI, (Sheffield uni) and spoke to someone and explained the situation. She seemed very aware of it and had obviously been asked before re this issue. I emailed exactly what was required off the AHPRA website ( section on it specifically) and then they gave me statement stating what i covered. It was simple in the end. I did P2000 too.

I hope that helps. I guess you will have to be very clear to the uni what they need to state.

Sorry I can't help with the degree bit. Do some digging. xx

Thanks Lauren. I spoke with the Uni today and they are able to give me a transcript of my study. Thanks for adivice re emailing the criteria from the AHPRA website - I'll do it tomorrow. The agent is looking into my degree. Can't see why it won't count - it's in health after all. We shall see.

Hope you are settling in.

Hi There

This whole issue has certainly stopped many nurses and midwives from migrating and meeting the AHPRA registration standards, the bottom line is that the qualification that in effect gave you the title of registered nurse/midwife has to be equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree (RN RM) they will not consider a diploma under any circumstances many have tried and failed. So although you have an degree in health and social welfare that qualification did not lead to you obtaining your RN so would not be valid.

Also a point of warning the organisation that assesses overseas trained nurses for migration ANMAC , can and has given a positive skills assessment for migration purposes but that does not mean you will neccessarily be able to register with AHPRA.

hope that helps

After lots of emails and questions I have had information from the agent that says 'It isn’t necessary that you has a degree when you qualified and registered as a nurse (i.e. the point at which you obtained a ‘statement of entry’ onto the register). AHPRA just care that you have a relevant degree now'. Also stated that in order for skills assessment to be valid I have to be eligible for APHRA and the two go hand in hand. So given this info Fingers crossed I should be ok and have started the process.......

hopefully that will be the same for you louloubelle....

Hi again

yes its true that it isn't a requirement to have the degree at initial registration, just that you have a Batchelor degree in nursing studies when you apply to AHPRA for registration

the rules changed last year it initially caused a real problem as some nurses had their visas, sold houses in UK then couldn't get registered, so couldn't get work, they compromised in the end and allowed applications submitted before the change to be processed under the pre change criteria but all those who submitted after were assessed under the new. In the end all you can do is submit an application and hope for the best btw AHPRA are just about as unpopular here as the NMC ,

good luck to you all

What is classed as nursing studies though as my masters in health professional education?? Which to be fair covered mostly the same modules as I'd I had done my top up degree. I am a teacher of higher education on the nmc register so not sure if that will still be the case for AHPRA. They do not give you a clear answer when you get in touch either.

  • 3 weeks later...

How are you getting on @louloubelle. I have booked my IELTS now and have started getting everything together to send of for skills assessment. My agent said that it was a bit complicated because my degree is not a 'nursing' degree and they won't accept my diploma alone but the with the two combined and my experience they are confident I should be ok. Fingers crossed.

Well I got my MSc certificate on Saturday so I can get the ball rolling now. I have all my documents for ANMAC and AHPRA so I am going to get them all certified this Friday and send everything off them I suppose it's just a waiting game!!! I will keep you updated. When are you doing the IELTs @JobyJo?? It's not so bad if you are well prepared, fingers crossed. Which agent are you using??

Hi @louloubelle. I'm doing the IELTS on 10th Oct. I think I'm quite well prepared but looking at past comments on here it's a nightmare and seems to take people a few try's at it. So fingers crossed I will be ok. Currently gathering all the information to send off for skills assessment. How long does it normally take to hear back if you are successful - any ideas??

Good luck for the 10th, for me it was more the really strict and mean examiners more than the test itself, I felt like a child again!!!!! Well I got all my documents for ANMAC and AHPRA certified today, all forms completed and in an envelope ready to post off tomorrow. My agent told my between 8-12 weeks for ANMAC so I am going to try and forget about it for a while. I will let you know when I hear and if it's good news.
