Anyone ever had any luck sending out speculative job emails?

Recommended Posts

Not due to arrive until February but I've already started reaching out to potential employers tonight via email (only the one sent out so far).

Just wondered if anyone else has ever gone down this route and, if so, whether or not it proved worthwhile?

CV is fine but boy am I struggling to compose the body of the emails. Don't know whether be totally formal or just friendly and polite. Total nightmare.

We arrived in 2007, so our experience is a little out of date, but hubby applied for a job - they contacted and wanted someone to start right away - we didn't have our visa and the application didn't proceed, they did say they liked his cv and would keep him in mind, some months after they contacted and asked if he'd now got a visa - we had and a date we were leaving, they offered to meet with him when we arrived and he started 2 weeks earlier.

I got offered an interview (nurse) after sending my CV and a letter, however, now, I would have been sent the link to any jobs to apply for.

Hey Ali, thanks for the reply.

I guess things will have been different back then so completely understand what you're saying. I'm just desperate to find work ASAP upon arriving so will try anything.

This has been a dream of mine for a long time now and I'd be devastated should it all fall apart due to not finding a job.

I have started sending my CV out, even on the roles that say I must be legally able to work in Oz, and the worse case scenario for me so far has been no replies, but in a few cases I have had a reply, which in turn has given me some 'real person' contacts for when I can apply, which I think will be better than just general job site details. Time will tell of course.

  • 2 weeks later...

We both sent emails, both had interviews by phone and Skype , job offers and contracts signed before leaving UK, they even waited 3 months while my wife worked her notice period, this was 3 years ago. After a few phone calls I got a feel for the people I was talking to and was a bit cheeky, pushed them to make me an offer, still work there today. If you get as far as an interview or 2 then it all goes quiet, don't panic, unlike UK Aussie employers will typically check your references before making you an offer, this can take several weeks. I work in the same industry as I did in the UK but at a higher level, I find it a more relaxed and informal environment than in the UK, good luck

Not my line so can't point you anywhere with that. There are a lot of companies near the airport on Abernethey Road that make and repair heavy truck trailers, lots of welding or,on Stirling Cresent, a lot of companies that service and repair heavy machinery before or after mine site use, again lots of welding work. Let me know if that's the kind of thing you could be after and I will get some company names for you, I go through their every day on the way to work

I operate machinery in a steel profiling and fabrication factory (plasma cutter, CNC drills and punches, saws, guillotines, etc.) Also do some welding.

hey TMS, if your planning on settling SOR then i can certainly give you plenty of company names and agencies that deal in that line of work , there are some good agencies here that specialise in that industry ........ Just let me know if i can help ....

Hey Sawdoctor.

Yeah man, agency names in particluar would be great as I've not contacted any yet.

We will initially be living NOR with family but haven't yet decided where we'll set up home ourselves.

By the way, I seen your post about wanting football players and that's definitely something I'd be interested in once we arrive. I'm very unfit now mind haha.

I'm office based, but there has been a big swing towards LinkedIn for job adverts from what I've seen.

Seek seems to only be recruiters, where LinkedIn seems to be more direct contacts.

Update (or create) your profile, but without any UK references. You don't even need your mobile/address on there, people can message you direct.
