Visa granted - looking at the suburb Butler - any advise on this location please?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

We had our visa granted in November and are looking to move over to Perth in June. We are currently looking at possible suburbs and have come across Butler. Does anyone know this area?

We are a family of 5. 9 year old, 3 year old and a 4 month old baby. We are looking for a family friendly location.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Cara

It is a far northern suburb.

It it is fairly popular with British people.

It it would very much depend on where you are likely to be working as it would be hard if you were working in the south.

I would wait wait until you arrive and visit places to get a feel. They can feel very different in real life to what you think. The couple of suburbs we thought we were certain we wanted to live in prior to arriving were the two that we liked the least after visiting. We ended up in a suburb we hadn't even considered.

I also did a job in Butler yesterday (Huntly ave) and she had been burgled, happening in so many suburbs. She (an Aussie) said they get so many weirdo's walking by, they've actually just moved to another rental in ..... Butler, this one though is enclosed by gates, has CCTV and alarm !!!!! The need for it eh!

Hate to disappoint you Keefo, but when we lived in East London we lived behind an enclosed gate and had an alarm. When we lived in Manchester, we had a house alarm and our car was broken into the first night there.. Trouble happens all around the world, not just in Perth! Been home 3 years now and not once have we had trouble.

In 41 years i knew nobody who was burgled in England, i used to play footy and socialised with many different people so would have heard. Here I know over half a dozen plus all the people I've done work for who say it's getting terrible. Yes you had gates and alarm etc but here it's the norm for CCTV, shutters, security screens, alarm, a lethal dog. I guess it's where you come from. When I used to travel to Liverpool for night matches it was always felt safer.

I don't think it is the norm. I am Australian and not once have my parents had any trouble in their nearly 65 years. I don't know anyone who has CCTV or any of the other things. My brother has shutters but that is for the heat! What do you class as a lethal dog, nasty breeds of dogs live all over the world!

Hi everyone

Thanks for your messages - are you saying Butler isn't a safe area to live in?

Thanks

Cara

You need to be here to get the feel of the place.

I have never had problems and people where saying the same about the area we choose.

Been here nearly 2 years and no one i know has had any trouble

It does not matter where u live you will get your druggies ECT.

I lived in a nice area back in England and cars got robbed off drives houses got broken into in.

You can not second guess where they are going to target.

Get here enjoy and pick area that suits your family.

If you end up in Butler give us a shout as we are across the road in Eden Beach, we have an 8 year old and 4 year old. Bulter as a place like any you have some who will say its great and other that say it horrible. There a quite a few xpats there and its not too far to travel depending on where you will work. I work in Fremantle so have a rather horrible drive to and from work, should be moving to Wangra this year so not forever. I would say have a good look around the area once here and see how it feels, i found that looking on real estate is okay(pretty much all i did leading up to coming out) however what you think is a cracking house and area has a different feel once you are in the street or looking around the house.

I echo what others have said about not making a decision to live somewhere based on internet research. Places can feel so different when you actually visit them... and I mean walk around them, visit the shops, schools etc, not just a drive through. We often get comments on this forum from people who had decided on an area just from the research they had done on the internet, but when they got here, they found it didn't suit them or feel right, and ended up living somewhere totally different. Research is a wonderful thing as it gives you a starting point, but keeping an open mind is important also.

Crimewise - well opportunist crime is everywhere in the world these days and in direct proportion to the rise in drug and alcohol abuse, and you just have to be aware of your personal circumstances, not leave your property unlocked, walk in dodgy areas in the dark alone, etc. But that is common sense anyway isn't it. Some areas are worse than others, as it is anywhere of course, but some people just seem to fixate on crime in order to justify their fear of same. There are a few threads on this forum about this, and you might like to read through them to better assess the situation.

I think you live in Rockingham Deb, that is where my mums friend has lived for the last 39 years or so and I think they've been ok too.
