New to forum planning on relocation from Scotland

Good evening or early morning in WA. I have a few questions that I am unable to find relevant recent information online and would love to chat with expats who have made the hard decision to relocate to Perth. We are little scared of the unknown mainly on my side my wife is a mental health nurse and I work in aviation as reliability engineer. It appears my wife can pick up work without too much hassle but not sure if this is the same for myself. Anyone on here have any idea of the best way to locate aviation work? I worked for a short time for bristow helicopters detached from Aberdeen however due to the downturn I have been told they have nothing at this time.

I am open to changing industy despite 10 years experience as gaining a job is my priority and I can't be fussy. What's it like finding work just now? My guess with mining being hit as well and oil and gas it might not be easy.

My my parents currenly live in Sorrrento but new to Australia so not much use and my dad got sent by his work so all expenses paid jammy sod!

My my wife would be applying for a skilled visa and I am guessing I would be able to join her based on her Skilled visa? Does anyone know how long a visa takes for a decision? Also how would you know if you have a good chance of acceptance? The reason I ask if this is a long process we would have to spend a lot to get everything in order.

Sorry for all the questions but I do appreciate any help that you can provide. ?

Hi and welcome to the forum

The first question is, is your wife degree qualified?

If so, then she can be the main applicant and yes, you would be granted a visa on the basis of this. It is always difficult to give advice on how long things take as there can be many cases where visas can be held up for different reasons. Assuming you are at the very beginning, then I would allow 6 - 9 months. It will take 3 - 5 to get the skills assessment in place. At the same time, she can undertake ILETS (English exams) and commence the registration for her work. Then, once ILETS and skills assessment are done, she submits an expression of interest (EOI) and then waits to be invited. Once invited, she does the actual application and then waits for a case officer to ask for medicals and police checks, then sits and waits for a decision.

On jobs front, yes, the economy has major issues and a long standing member of the forum in the same occupation as yourself has recently returned to the UK as a result.

Hi thank you for the welcome and response.

My wife does have mental health degree :)

We are looking at the application process as we speak and will apply within the coming weeks. Do you know how you go about sitting the English exam etc or does that flow as part of the application for the visa?

Ok this was my concern I am hoping perhaps if I can't get into aviation I can find a role in another field.

thanks again

Steven

She will need to get a skills assessment before she applies and I believe for nurses this will require an English exam as well, but which must be done at academic standard rather than general.

There are several options for the English exam, the most popular of them is ILETS. She will need to arrange this herself. https://www.ielts.org/

She will need the academic version for the skills assessment, however, if she also needs it for points and doesn't score enough on the academic test for the points needed, then she can also do the general for the points.

So, she needs to get all the things done, before she lodges an expression of interest.

I would also check that her degree satisfies the skills assessment criteria as some of the specialist nursing degrees do not.

It may be worth as a result having a quick chat with a registered migration agent.
