Scotty 11 Report post Posted July 11, 2016 Hi Everyone, We are going to be doing a visa validation run in November. We were just wondering if there is anything we can do on our trip to save us some hassle when we finally make the move? For the moment I am thinking we could open bank accounts and pick up the cards. We are also going to leave our whole suitcase of clothes with a friend. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks Scott

Nic964 10 Report post Posted July 12, 2016 I'd also suggest you take time to look at different areas around Perth, to give you a feel for where you may want to live. Prices vary significantly across the region, and my experience was that you do need to drive around and see different areas to get a feel for them.

Scotty 11 Report post Posted July 12, 2016 Hi Thanks for the replies! So my hit list so far is: 1 - Pick up bank cards (thinking about going with NAB) 2 - Get Tax number (Anyone know how I do this?) 3 - Look at places to live

Scotty 11 Report post Posted July 12, 2016 See https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Tax-file-number/Apply-for-a-TFN/ Thanks for the link. So I do it online? I thought it was something to do when I was there? It also says I need an Australia address?
ricco56 10 Report post Posted July 13, 2016 The ATO website helps you determine your residency status for tax purposes. If you intend to work during your visit, or stay more than 6 months, or make any Australian investments while you're here it is necessary to have a TFN. Otherwise it's something you can delay until you move permanently. You can obtain a TFN at any time, even before you leave the UK. Whether you need to use it is another matter.
