I am married and have 2 sons aged 4 and 6 months and i will be heart broken leaving them. I work in construction (as a builder) but willing to try absolutely anything. So is there still plenty work and whats my chances of sponsorship so my wife and boys can come live in perth to. Guest Neil.F
Hi qk1 I am in the same boat as you. I have my one year working holiday visa and am heading to Perth in November. I have a partner and a 7 year old son. The reason I can't head over now is that I have to wait for my ARTC (skills recognition certificate) to arrive back to me from TRA Australia as I am currently being assessed for my skills as an electrician. I know as an electrician there is plenty of work and once your willing to work a 3 month trial period most employers have no problem sponsoring. I take it that its much the same for builders. They are keen to sponsor people with families too because they realise your not gona run off and take up another position at the drop of a hat as your family are depending on you. You need to make sure that the company that hire you are registered to sponsor migrants, because if they aren't it will add at least 2/3 months until you get your sponsorship visa which enables your family to travel out. All in all should be looking at 4/5 months from the time of taking up a position to getting your visa. It's not gona be easy leaving the family, I hear you on that one!! But sometimes these things have to be done to ensure a better future, and will all pay off in the end!!
Guest qk1
Hay Neil, Thanks for your reply, I dont have my skills recognised and I think you do need it to get sponsorship, but hopefully I can do that when I get out there! I was kinda hoping they would be out with me for Jan, as Im coming home at christmas and thought the one trip home would do...My wife couldnt take them and all our stuff over on her own! We have friends that have just landed on monday, so keeping in touch with them to see whats the story with work and living cost etc... My wife's a teacher so hopefully she will be able to find work quick enough. We couldnt apply for sponsorship straight out as neither of us have full time work! We should keep in touch and hopefully we will all get out there for a better life.
Guest Neil.F
I reckon that building is just a case of showing what you can do over a trial period, the reason I have to get my skills recognised now is because I need it to apply for my electrical licence to allow me to work with electrics over there. A friend of mine was there recently doing basic on site labouring and he had very little previous experience. They were paying him $25/hr. It normally takes bout a month for the 457 (sponsored visa) to arrive back from the time of application, this can vary though. I would say that you will be incredibly lucky to get your family out by January. My partner will be coming over on her own, but we ain't bringing anything, starting from scratch!! The same reasons here for not being able to apply for the skilled visa, no work either!! But the way we are going about it is the quickest way, as hard as it may be to head out on our own. The skilled visa takes about 2 years to get! Hey, don't be worrying about getting work out there, I know people over there now and its all positive on the work front.
