Guest Guest4575
Hi, sorry if this is a really dumb question, but.........I have got confused by the rules regarding bringing a car with me!So if we have a car that we bought used, so it's a couple of years old, and we wanted to import it - I am trying to work out whether it's possible at all (by paying some import duty and GST?) or if it's just impossible?I'm talking about a MINI, and I see they are REALLY expensive in Oz, compared to the UK.....Thanks! djb007
Hi I have enquired with 2 shipping agents and both have confirmed that you must have owned the car for a minimum of 12 months before you can import a vehicle. The goverment website also confirms this

ali
I'd look into how easy it is to get parts/servicing for imported cars ... might prove to be a bit more expensive if they're not popular over here
phil
I've heard that too - whilst you can get Citroen, Peugeots etc people I've spoken to say the parts are very expensive.

That's what I heard too Phil (hence the post), European cars are much more expensive here so don't see many on the roads (at least I haven't)
Guest 4lex
There are a couple of ways around that, but they're really special circumstances issues. One is if the vehicle is and never was for sale in Australia and is deemed to be of notable interest, and the other is whether it could be deemed to be a collectors item. There is a government website that tells all, but if we're talking about a Mondeo (or similar) it's not going to float On the parts thing, all parts are crazy money here. I have a toyota 4wd and an holden badged vectra and invariably import parts. Recent example was some plugs and sensors for the Vectra - holden wanted over $1.5k, I had them couriered here from the UK for under $300. Guest Guest4575
Thanks for all the helpful replies, folks! I'm aware of someone who recently imported a body kit from UK for their MINI, and even after paying shipping and taxes, saved a fortune over local prices! And my sister helps run a BMW dismantler over in Melbourne - they do great business in helping to keep older (and even newer) Beemers on the road in Oz. I guess I'll have to go for Plan B - find a really good pre-1989 classic Mini to import!
deanhewitt
it is a bummer as we bought a mercedes in February for my partner before deciding to mover to Perth and although we will be coming over in November we cannot bring it. We even enquired whether there was a way we could leave it in the UK with the shipping company for a couple of months but they said no. Certainly wont be buying a new mercedes in Perth thats for sure lol
