What a sad day! Heartbroken!

Well today I had to say fairwell to my dog. She went away with her new owners. I am feeling really low now and have had a good cry to myself.

God if I am like this with my dog, goodness knows how I am going to manage saying goodbye to my family and friends!

Aaw, that is really sad! I am sure that the new owners are really lovely and will treat your dog well. It is very hard to give up pets when moving away. I have been thinking long and hard about that, but cannot give up my dog. You are very brave!! Good luck with your move. x

I really feel for you, it is such a hard decision.

I have been through the same we immigrated in 2005 and did not take our two cats ( one was not fit to travel ) it was so very hard, I like you settled them before we left and my sister went to see them which helped me.

The fact that you also have settled your dog in her new home before you leave and can keep in touch is much better than sending her off as you leave ( it would be torture )

We are taking our dog this time ( it was how my husband won me over!!)

Good luck with the family I am also dreading this part as my parents don't want us to leave :(.

Time is a great healer xx

She is going to a fantastic home, probably better than she had with me but I am going to miss her so much, she was my perfect dog. Never mind, it was just a sacrifice I had to make for my family to hopefully get the life we have been dreaming of. There is no way we could afford to take her over at this moment of time.

Thanks for the comforting messages though ladies!

I cant imagine what you are going through with your family Anouska, my family are sad that we are leaving with their only grandchild but are so supportive aswell.

There are some very sad choices that come with the migration packages ..when we came i told my oh if i left anyone it would be him , not the dog ... I know we were lucky that we were able to bring him with us and i really feel for those who can't ..

It sounds like your dog has a good home and thats a great thing , also that you loved him enough to make sure of it  all the best with the rest !

We decided without a doubt that our dog was coming with us. But 2 weeks before he was due to fly he became really ill suddenly and we had to put him to sleep. It was devastating!!! I couldn't function properly for about a week.

When we actually left and said our goodbyes, nothing was as sad as saying goodbye to our dog, so I suppose leaving was easier. We have been here nearly a year and he is the only thing/person we miss.

Hi PPTB, We did the same 2 and a half years ago. It killed us to do it but like you we couldnt afford to bring her with us. We had hoped to rehome her with family but were let down last minute so it was twice as hard, world of dfference in your head between leaving your baby with family or giving her to a stranger. In the end a friend of a friend took her, a pub landlady, unfortunately she didnt keep in touch but my friend saw her about a year back and took a pic for us, apparently she is fat and happy! We thought about her all the time and given the time over we would have tried harder to make it possible to bring her, we still miss her. But...we have 2 new babies now and the memory of our first is fading....you have to do what you think is best for your family. Good luck and hugs I know how you are feeling x

Thank you so much for all the kind messages. Makes me feel better that I am not the only one who has had to do it. I know that I have given her to the right person as already the family have sent me pics of her with the other dogs swimming in the loch at the bottom of the garden!! I definately couldnt provide her with a life like that! lol.

We had an 8 month old Labradoodle, and quite frankly we just could not afford the £3-£4000 that it was going to cost to bring him out. We were on a very tight budget and it may sound callous but we had to make cuts. It was an extremely hard decision but in hindsight I still would do it again. We are renting and we cant have a dog where we rent and it was quite easy rehoming him. We cant wait to have our house built now so that we can have a dog again :wubclub:

We left our 10 yr old Staffie with my 26 yr old son back in Scotland and now he is coming our for a year and we have to rehome my dog! I know how you feel PPTB as it is absolutely devastating....I feel so guilty too just now as I dodnt get her to rehome her years later! We were going to take her out her but our cat got hit by a car over here and we discovered that when we thought we were covered by insurance, we actually werent!! So far $4500 and cannot affor to take the dog........also she cant stand real heat so would it actually be fair......we dont feel it would. Trouble is, who wants to take on an older dog.......not many folk. Anyhoo, he is hopeful to be getting her a good home. Good luck with your move......it will all be worth it in the end.......;)

So sorry hun, ive got this to come. You have done the right thing and it hurts us more than the animals. They will miss us for about a week and then thats it they are off happy. At least you found a caring new owner he will love your dog, that is very important.

Lots of hugs. Now go and have a strong drink or 2 or 3.

Me & OH are at loggerheads over this situation. Yamba our Bullmastiff is our baby, and he knows it. lol It will be about 4k to bring him over and he will be 8 years not old but in the lifespan of this breed it is getting on in years. I think if my son stays he will look after him, but i want son to come to Perth.

I cannot imagine how you have felt leaving your best friends, but we have to do what is best for our dogs.

It has been a week now that my dog has been at her new home and she seems to be loving it. I am however still devastated, keep forgetting she is gone and look for her especially when I am going out the house to go for a walk etc. My 2 year old is missing her too and I dont think he understands that she wont be coming back. Next week things are going to really start kicking off here with the removal company coming in etc so hopefully that will all help keep my mind off it.

Thanks for all the lovely messages.

Hi Bev, I wish you all the luck in the world with your move to Oz. It's good that your dog has gone to a good home, makes life a little easier, although still very sad that you have had to leave her behind. You must be getting excited knowing that it's nearly time for your furniture to go!!! I am so envious, I have to wait until the end of the year before my I say goodbye to my furniture for a couple of months!! Take care, Michelle x

We are moving to Perth 1st of November and had a siberian husky,i knew we would be moving either end of this year or beggining of next.We had her for nearly two years and i was the same it was like losing a member of the family.I have three daughters who where equally devastated but we found the dog a new home in june.I would definately suggest if you know you are going to be moving to do this type of thing straight away.I was just thinking of my daughters as it is going to be enough trauma moving away from family as well as getting rid of the dog all in a short space of time. Now the girls have seen that xena the dog is happy with her new owners and the children are equally happy about moving.

Good luck and hope all is well.
