I aim to stay there for a bit and then hopefully get to see more of Oz throughout the year. I am lucky enough to have got a place to stay all sorted, but I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on other bits and bobs...Like what to do about a mobile phone, bank and of course meeting people! Guest angiehug Posted September 5, 2011 Report Share Posted September 5, 2011 Hi Verity Couple of tips - mobile phones; If you're with Vodafone, you can just swap your UK sim with a Vodafone Australia pay and go sim. Any other network and you'll have to get your phone unlocked, then just pop in a regular Pay and Go sim with Telstra in Australia. As for banks - apply NOW! You can apply for a bank account before you get to aus, and it's a simpler and easier process if you do it before hand. Go with ANZ or Commonwealth banks - both you can apply online but you need to do it atleast a month in advance. In google search ANZ Migrant banking, or coMMONwealth migrant banking. they have a video and everything on the subject. You will need a bank account to start work and have your wages paid into. et voila! You'll also need tax file number - which you can only apply for once you're iN australia, but you need this in order to start work. Takes about up to 10 days to get it to come through to your new aussie address. Don't worry about tax though all the tax you pay while in aus you'll get back at the end of the tax year as you're only a temporary resident and tax exile! enjoy! x Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
