Give me a break!
One of the major things you worry about when leaving the UK and moving all the way over here, is what will happen you need medical help, how much is it all going to cost and can you afford it. Id like to share my story if I can because Id like to set your minds at rest :- here is my experience. About 10 days ago I went to the doctors and I had found a lump in my left breast and was starting to worry about it. The Doctor examined me and he agreed it was there and found another for good measure in my right breast. He gave me a referral for a Mammogram, an ultrasound and a fine needle biopsy ( just in case) the referral letter gave me a list of about 20 places I could go to get this done. I phoned my closest and they said the could fit me in today. I drove up into the clinic this morning and drove straight into the free open carpark. Walked in where I was greeted by a lovely receptionist who took some details and asked me to wait in the waiting room. I had my mammogram where they took two extra films to be on the safe side. They told me that the lump did need investigating and sent me straight to the ultrasound room up the corridor. A lovely nurse greeted me and got me comfy on the table and the doctor did a really thorough examination and ruled out anything to worry about and said there was no need for a needle biopsy. After bursting into tears of relief and having a five minute sob, the lovely nurse, bless her, showed me to the reception to pay. It cost me $270 of which medicare will pay $180 so for $90 I was in and had the tests and received the results within 1 hour and 15 minutes !! Now I could have got that covered by my medical insurance if I had gone elsewhere but I would have had to wait longer for the appointment so I decided to pay. I hope this personal story helps anyone else out there who is worrying about medical treatment here. Mine has been absolutly second to none

Guest Liz B
Glad everything is ok, I can understand how worried you must have been. Good that the health service was spot on also. Liz x
ali
I've been for an ultrasound following some abnormal blood results - cost me $192 (I'll get about $94 back), went to a local radiology clinic and will pick up the films tomorrow. Previously my daughter has been to ED for an eye injury and they were superb, my GP has stitched my sons head, and cared for a wound that my hubby had, even game him the tetnus himself. I haven't been able to fault any of the care we've been given. I think that people forget that they've been paying for health care in the UK via their national insurance contributions, certainly over the 25 years that I paid ... I paid a fair whack.
