After popping in now and again and reading everyones threads for the last month or so ive now become completely dependant on PerthPoms and instead of cleaning my teeth its the first thing I do in the morning and the last thing at night! So thought it time to say hello.

After being offered a job in mid July our 457 application was lodged 2 weeks ago and with any luck we ( steve, lauren, cerys, finlay and freya ) will be in perth in the not too distant future. We were lucky that we had just recieved an offer on our house before this opportunity came up so we are all ready to roll.

The horrible part of this process is that our lives are now in limbo, not knowing whether to plan for oz or hold back in case we get a knock back and i really feel for everyone in the same situation and also the relief/excitement of those whose visas have been approved. Really is a rollercoaster ride eh.

Heres a few of our dilemas:

We feel bad to uproot the kids as they are so settled but we just worry as to what the future here holds for them.

Weve booked some shipping agents to quote us but have no idea what we are or arent going to bring yet - £5000 seems a lot but i doubt wed furnish a house for that!

Where to live seems a bit hit and miss. The company ill be working for are based in Joondalup so were thinking of Quinns Rocks, Mindarie etc but again not sure.

Lauren is a sign language interpreter and is unsure of what work she may or may not pursue - hope shes not wanting to be a kept woman!

The other major thing for us is schools for the kids as we really want them to settle and do well.

Finlay plays alot of football so is keen to join a good team

Freya is very sporty so would like lots of extra activities and clubs

Cerys is into art and design and isnt really in to her sport although shes a great swimmer - " i dont want to do loads of sport dad"

Sorry to waffle on but im just scratching the surface here. Ha. Looking foreward to to all your threads/posts and best of luck everyone

Steve

Hi & welcome

I don't have great knowledge of what your asking as I did most of my research over the 2 years we've waited for our visa's, Joondalup & Quinns Rock etc from what i've read have a lot of young families, Perth have a great rugby club for all ages, I found that using Google http://www.rugbywa.com.au/, as for swimming http://www.swimmersguide.com/query/Detail.cfm?PoolID=11147, for art this may be of interest http://www.currambinejoondalupartandcraftshow.com.au/children.html

During our journey we purchased 2 books, they have been our bibles, In Suburbia from http://www.insuburbia.net gives a big picture of all suburbs, schools, shops, transport, a huge directory in colour easy to follow key teletubbie format, pricey but worth it, The migrants guide to emigrating and settling in Australia www. pomsdownunder.com, step by step process to thinking about emigrating to getting there, a fantastic huge check list, invaluable information, hope some of this helps you out.

Hello, we are uprooting and going to Perth with 2 boys aged 8 and 4, our 8 year old is obsessed with rugby but says he doesn't want to move to Australia, but I truly believe we are doing the best thing for our children by giving them this great opportunity to live in Australia, theres got to be more prospects over there for sporty children than here. We have found a rugby club for our son to join by googling rugbyclubs in Perth but we are moving to SOR so no use giving you their details, we are very much a rugby family and loving the world cup at the moment, its typical when the world cup is going to be in England we are going to be in Australia.

We are in middle of selling our house and can't do anything or pack anything till ready to move out, we will be living with my hubbies parents in Oz to start with so not taking any furniture as we will only have to store it over there.

Good luck with everything.

Hi suziepops fancy running in to you.

Hi,

It looks like we were in the same boat, I have just gone through the whole job interview and waiting game and I know how frustrating and stressful it is. Thankfully it has all come good and I start my new job in Perth on the 31st of October. I'm sure it will for you to.

Because of a few issues at home (wife’s job, softening the blow for grandparents, shutting up shop in UK, etc) we have decided that I will go to Perth on my own and then the family (Dawn my wife and 2 girls aged 8 & 11) will come over in the new year.

My 2 kids are also against moving at the moment but it’s a combination of the fear of the unknown and leaving behind friends and like you it’s been a big issue for Dawn and I to deal with but we are sure in the long term because of the quality of life we hope to have in Perth it’s for the best. As regards to school I have been told that until you know where you will be living it is difficult to enroll your kids into school as it’s all about catchment. We are also looking at Mindarie as a possible area to live but we won’t make any decisions until we are all over there next year. For some reason my wife doesn’t trust me to make a selection for a house when she isn’t there!!

One tip I have had, is that if your kids are currently in scouts, guides brownies etc then make sure you get a transfer form from their current pack. This will put you to the top of the waiting lists when you get over here.

Stay in touch

All the best and good luck

Stu

Hi Suziepops

Have taken your advise and ordered a copy of the suburbia book. I lived in Perth in the mid nineties but didnt pay any attention to any suburbs other than the leaderville where I was living and of course Scarborough and Cottesloe. Perth has grown so much since then!

I take it you are applying for permanent residency. Where are you thinking of living.

Hi mamaswary

There are quite a few good clubs in Perth. When i lived there in the mid nineties Cottesloe were the best of the club sides but not sure now. Out of interest which club are you looking to get involved with. I was going to look for a veterans side as getting a bit too old now! The company ill be working for are based in Joondalup but havent ruled out sor - Rockingham/Secret Harbour. Where are you guys looking to settle? Typical about the world cup being over there but look on the bright side the British Lions are touring Australia in 2013.

Hope the house sale goes smoothly. Half our stuff is in storage and weve no idea what to take or sell.

Best of luck

Steve

Hi Stu

We too have thought of myself going over first and lauren even suggested that i could research areas, schools etc and rent a house ready for their arrival but im not sure i trust myself!! Might also be too much for her to deal with the shipping etc and keeping it all together.

Weve twins, Cerys and finlay who will be 12 in november and freya who is 10 and its their futures that are attracting us to Australia. Theyve such good friends that theyve known since nursery that it will be tough but worthwhile im sure.

Thanks for the tip about guides well make sure to get transfer forms.

What occupation are you in.

Best of luck

Steve

Hi Steve

We already have our PR Visas sat in our passports and will be leaving the UK - one way this Friday 30th, can't wait to get there!

SOR seems to appeal to us as my OH will be FIFO, hope you find the book as informative as we did and still do.

I totally understand your worries about moving your kids but your reasons for wanting to do so. We were really worried about uprooting our 10 year old son but I can honestly say I am really pleased we did it. He has settled into his new school amazingly well and is thriving here. He played rugby in the UK but has decided to swap rugby for athletics here and is loving that. There are so many sporting clubs here, your children will be spoilt for choice. the problem is, trying to fit them all in :-)

Hi Steve we are looking at Palmyra rugby club in Alferd Cove for Lewis to join, by cioncidence his dad used to play there aswell, we will be staying just outside Fremantle so pretty central to a lot of things. House has fallen through and going back on market tomorrow grrr. I love Secret harbour, viewed a few houses when we were over in March, really nice place lots of playing areas for the kids, but no shope for me, good excuse to visit Mandurah.

Take care Mamaswary.
