Guest TheMozzies
Good morning from a rather stormy Torquay, Vic. We have been here in Torquay for 16 months and have settled well and are loving the Aussie way of life in a beautiful part of this great country. However, there is bit of a big problem and we don't know what to do. My OH managed to get a job within 2 days of landing and has been very happy there, except the wages, they are very low. he is a mechanic and is currently working on tractors and other farm machinery. I have tried for over a year now to get a job and nothing doing, been applying for everything, been to see all recruitment agencies in Geelong and still not even an interview! OH has now been speaking to contractors out in Perth and has received very positive feedback, pretty much told to get there and he could start work the next day!!!! Money on offer is well over double his current wage. is this realistic or is it as it seems, to good to be true??? We are in two minds, do we make the move over to Perth and give it a go, or do we stick it out here and hope I can get a job. The kids are very settled , but are not too upset about moving again, they said they would rather do it now than hang on and make more friends. My eldest is year 7 and the youngest year 5. Any advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Tara
welshie
Hi Tara, We live in Perth and generally the employment outlook for trades people is very good. I had a look in Saturdays paper and there are a lot of mechanic positions advertised. If you think you'd be better off financially here then i'd say go for it, but only if you think you'd be able to sustain a nice lifestyle. My husband works at least 50 hours a week, and that seems to be expected of you. WA is a beautiful part of the country, lots to do and see. My kids love it here! phil
Might be worth taking a trip over to Perth for a week or two? Kids and you could have an explore and a bit of a holiday, your husband could spend some of the time looking at current work situation? Guest Bob Tonnor
Wow, id say youve got it good, your hubby has a job in Torquay and can get a new job in Perth, plenty of jobs for mechanics in WA, you like where you live and your kids are happy to move...hang on maybe you do have problems! why cant they make it easy for you! If i were you id make a list of whats important to you, such as the lifestyle where you are compared to WA or Perth in general, do you own or rent? what are your outgoings? Are you going to be better off generally financially wise? Its not an easy choice i know because ive done it a couple of times, the last time we moved along way for work we realized we made a massive mistake and moved back within 10 months, mind you queanbeyan was involved! http://www.locationlowdown.com.au/search/results/NSW/Queanbeyan Id make my list, marks out of 10 for each item and which ever wins, do it, you can always move back if it doesnt suit. Sorry if i confused it even more, but good luck with your choices Bob
Guest TheMozzies
Hi, thanks for your replies. The reason we are looking to move is mainly financial, the wages here for mechanic's are not good and the cost of renting and or buying is very high, so the two don't really go together!!!! We are renting at the moment and really want to be in position to buy ..... Nothing fancy just a three bed place to call our own, where we can hang pictures up if we want and get a pet or two. I am worried that we will not be able to afford to do anything if the wages and or job situation for me doesn't improve quickly, and the very last thing we want is to head back to the UK. More research is needed I think!!!! At least this move won't be as hard as the last move we made. Tara
jackboots
Hi there , Tara .. what is your job can you see work here being easier to find for you ? saying that if your oh is on better wages would you need to work ? must be a really hard choice .. one plus side we have great weather and parks/ beaches etc which is great for the outdoors for the kids ! Guest TheMozzies
Hi jackboots ...... My thinking is that if OH is earning at least double then me stressing about finding a job can take a back burner and I can re-train to do something worth while (nursing maybe). We would have a better quality if life as rent is cheaper than here and the wages double so financially it makes sense. Don't have any attachments really to where we are and I think it is best that we make the move before the kids change their mind, so we made the decision last night to go for it. Bit scared now as have all the hard work to do again, hoping will be able to secure a rental from here to save pennies on the temp accommodation, got quotes for moving the furniture and car over, so now I just need to convince the rental agency to let us out of our lease early without too much expense!!!! Oh and we need to decide where to move to. Thanks for all your help I'm sure I'll have loads of questions about suburbs and travel times etc. Quite excited this morning Bout it all, well gives me something to do. jackboots
Good luck with it all , i take it you have looked at the usual websites www.reiwa.com.au and www.gumtree.com.au also look at www.thewest.com.au it the paper and Wed and Saturday is jobs night .. prob the best way to look for jobs in some ways .. maybe if you got here earlier than your shipping you could stay at a holiday park, there are so many around and may work out cheaper in the interim ( children love that sort of thing anyway ) would prob give you time to look at area's and Jobs etc .. just an idea
verystormy
Has he considered working as a mechanic in mining in WA? You could still live at home and he would go away for a week then have a week off. Salary would be a LOT more than he is on now and no need to move. In my opinion the fifo life is better than monday to friday working as well. Much better quality time off
riboid
Lots of work in Perth and moneys good too. If the kids are that young, well, no big hassles in moving. Nice weather (nearly) and summers coming.
