Guest Missy0810
My o/h drives, but would be happy to use public transport if that was easier. I can't yet drive, and therefore would like to live in an area that provides easy access to shops, parks (beach perhaps?) and other amenities to keep myself and our 20 month old son busy during the day. portlaunay
Hi and welcome. We moved here around two months ago and started off in Fremantle (Freo). It was lovely; really close to the sea, great cafe/restaurant culture with a nice little market and boutique shops. It was, however, hellishly expensive and we didn't get much for our money (2 beds in what could best be described as a large shed!). We've now moved to a suburb about a 20 minute drive inland and there are plenty of buses to get around and a train that is two stops to the CBD. For less than we were paying in Freo we have 6 beds and a pool, parks all around, school and kindy in walking distance, local shops close by and a large mall and markets a 10 minute bus ride away. That said, I think I'd find it a little limiting without a car but in my experience the people here are just so friendly and helpful and once you get your toddler into a playgroup or swimming group and such like you'll make friends so easily. We moved here from London where my commute of 15 miles took an hour or more and compared to that every journey here is a breeze. Most people I know here think you must be crazy to commute for more than 20 minutes and from Subi there are some lovely areas that will give you everything you want and mean he gets to enjoy homelife too. My advice would be not to worry too much about it from the UK. Find something temporary here to move into and explore when you get here. In a city this small you can know it in a month. Good luck, Missy

phil
Have a look around at homehound.com.au and realestate.com.au. And have a map handy - you'll get an idea of what's available in what suburb at what price. I work in Subiaco and it's a nice place - but then so is the rest of the city. Take a look at transperth.wa.gov.au for info on where/when the trains and buses run - it may help rule in/out some suburbs. Everything in Perth seems to be 20 minutes away. I live in Victoria Park which is the wrong side of the river and the wrong side of the city to get to work really. But it still only takes 20 or so minutes in the car. We set a budget and had some suburbs in mind and then tried to look at lots of rental properties to see what our dollars would get. It kind of confirmed what we'd figured - the closer to the city or the beach you are, the less space etc your dollars get. Just have to compromise somewhere. For us, a short commute trumped having a big garden etc. One thing to perhaps bear in mind when planning is that getting an appointment to view a property can be arduous. I kind of figured that we'd look for a property we liked online, ring the agent and arrange to pop round after work or at the weekend to view it. It doesn't quite work like that - most viewings are in working hours during the week and the agent won't generally arrange a viewing unless several people are interested. You then apply to rent and give a "fee" at that time (it's knocked off the later fees if you're successful in your application). Apparently this is done to disuade people from applying for multiple rentals.
Guest tammychick
hi were stil looking for a house and have been hear nearly 3 weeks it can be a little stressfull as they agents are not helpfull at all u can only fill out 1 application at a time as its a legal document and then u are point scored so make sure you have all ur document ready when u arrive like references morgate or rent statements and peolpe they can contact to be a wittness. we looked loads before we came over and seen loads of houses but they go really quick. with regards to the suburbs you really have to have a drive around and have a feel from the place we personally like north of the river and there seems to be more british community about i dont drive and have been taking the bus and train everywhere which is quite easy the best advice would be arrive buy a good street map/book and sit on the internet try and find some u like then look around the area. apart from that its beautiful hear and can safely say i dont want to go back hope this helps

Guest Har00n
Hi Missy, I've been here in perth since july, and can understand the fustration. I'm from scotland, but was also living in london, and so knowe all boput the commute. (1.5 hour commute for your oh?? perth to glasgow by any chance???) Anyway, just look on domain.com.au, realestate.com.au and reiwa.com.au. you really want somewhere next to a train line, as you can get from north or south into the city, quick switch to next line and out to subi. i personally prefer north of the river, as the beaches here seem prisitine, white and clean, and houses appear newer, but theres so many suburbs and houses to choose from. been here 2 months, and still haven't explored as much as i'd like too... One thing to bear in mind, real estate agents here are pretty non-helpful. You have to get in quick to view a house and if you like it, apply straight away. Also, they do inspections here, so when you do move into a house, make sure you note any cracks/marks/ anything thats doesn't match the inventory report, as they may come after you to get it fixed. (have heard all sorts of horror stories from work colleagues here who've been here for 5-10 years, so far personally ive not had any probs, but i've only had to deal with them once and got a viewing before anybody else, which kinda sealed the deal foe me). Anyways, good luck when you get here! its spring now, and getting hot. can't wait to see what summer is like! H.
Guest Missy0810
Thanks Har00n! I'm just going to have a look on the websites you've all given me just to get an idea, but it's really useful to get the info about the inventory, etc. Thanks for that Well, enjoy your sunny spring!! It's getting quite chilly here x
