Schools and Recreational Areas

I am sorry for the inconvenience my husband is coming to work in Perth within the Oil and Gas Industry, myself and my son aged 13 are coming over early next year. I am thinking on moving to the southern Perth area. Schools are important but recreational time is equally important my son loves football and we need to be close to recreational areas where this is permitted. He is a normal 13 year old no exceptional outstanding mathematical talents just cheeky and rather funny. Please can someone point me in the right direction. The malls are out he hates shopping unless its for him. Thanks

Hi and welcome.

We've been here just a couple of months and we're SOR and from our experience there are parks everywhere. We're in quiet suburbia and between home and school we ride the bikes through three parks and only cross one road and it's five minutes away. Don't worry, the last thing he'll want to do is go to a mall, there's just so much more for him to do; kayak on the river, swim, beach, parks, footie and more sport than he'll ever have the hours to cope with, surfing, body boarding, wind surfing, jet skiing, horse riding the list is just endless.

My kids are in a great school and they love it.

When you arrive net year you'll wonder why you didn't make it out sooner. Good luck with the move and tell him he's going to have the most epic adventure of his life.

No. I've one in juniors and one in kindy but they made friends so easily. They're the only Brits in their classes and have just fitted in so well. Every morning they are waiting by the door for me, they're so eager to get to school. the curriculum is very different here and certainly their school is less formal than what they're used to.

My 8yr old has commented that none of the children are naughty and everyone seems so happy.

The only worry we had before we got here was that it would be too quiet and that it'd be like living in a small village where all the kids hit the booze and drugs as soon as they're in double figures but to be honest there's just so much for them to do, particularly if they're into sport.

My son loves the sea and whilst the Indian Ocean is pretty cold at this time of the year we can't keep him out of it.

There's a huge park opposite our house and all the kids meet there to 'shoot hoops'. At first my son was wary of the older children but he was so excited when he came home as the older ones were teaching him how to play.

There are a few scally's around armed with perhaps a spray can but on the whole I've found teenagers here to be amazingly polite, mature and engaging, it really is just a joy compared to London where they'd be carrying a knife or gun.

Hi Everyone,

I have been looking at the Hamilton Hill -Aubin Grove - Willetton - Atwell area not sure though:confused:!! My husband has only just been offered this job and they want him out in 3 weeks. I am wanting a fairly modern house with kids in the area. We haven't discussed schools with him yet....but I have a feeling that Willetton and Rossmoyne maybe a cut above our wee guy if I was to tell him a Blazer was mandatory it may "tip him over the edge". Suz good luck how did your boys take it? What made you decide to make the move?

The beautiful scottish weather did it for us. The boys were a little apprehensive but felt better after a tour of the school (St Emmanuel Catholic College) and outdoor areas available. Do you only have the one child? I am sure everything will work out try not to stress too much about it. If there is any help I can give you just let me know and keep in touch.

Hi, we're in Willetton and the High School here of the same name is regarded as very good. As I understand it a lot of people move here to be in the catchment areas of Willetton or Rossmoyne. None of the kids seem particularly bothered about their uniforms, I don't see any of them changing or abandoning their jackets as soon as they step out of the grounds and any inter school rivalry seems to be resolved on the sports field.

Houses around here tend to be mostly mid '80s but there are newer ones as well as some old timber frame examples dotted around.

Before we came we 'walked' around on Google Streetview. It's awkward trying to view properties, agents tend not to take the time to show just one tenant around but there are open houses at weekends and there's no real shortage of options.

If you want specific info on the area PM me, I'm happy to do some digging for you.

You will need to live in the catchment areas for Willeton and Rossmoyne - both schools have older suburbs surrounding it. There are lots of parks and rec fields in the areas, you've mentioned, as well as football clubs if he wan't to play organised football. You do have to pay registration fees here.
