G'day Peeps,

We're hoping to be coming out in the New Year, ( to Perth that is ) and I've got 2 teenagers who've both got Blackberry Curves. Just wanted to know if anyone else has taken their Blackberry and using an Aussie sim and can still get BBM .

Any help appreciated

TJ

HI TJ,

Sorry I've not the the answer but i was just about to post the same question. I've a Blackberry Curve 9300 and it's been suggested i need to get it chipped or unblocked before it can be used? Not sure if this should be done here in uk or when we arrive in Perth (5th Decemeber 2011)

Any help or advise from Perth Poms would be great, thanks

Martin

I think it will depend on if the device is locked to a UK network or not.

If it's not locked to a network in the UK, you should be able to put an Australian SIM in it, and if it's got a suitable data plan etc, it should work.

If it is locked/under a contract with a UK network it can be unlocked - the network will likely charge a fee to do so and it's probably better to get it unlocked whilst still in the UK.

I second that - get the device/s unlocked from the UK, whether from the network provider - or some shop. Once done - make sure it is unlocked by borrowing a sim card from someone different to the one the device was on originally to verify it is indeed unlocked.

Now, when i came from the UK 2 years ago i brought over a blackberry 8800 which i had unlocked from a market stall (in the UK) for about a tenner. I was able to use an Optus pay as you go sim here. There was one issue however, Optus were reluctant to let me add any 3G data plans (even if i purchased bolt on bits) onto the device as they "were not allowed to put blackberry data onto it ! - unless i went onto a new 2 year contract with them - in which case they would have given me a new BB anyway !

If i had an iphone or any other phone which could support 3G, they said no problem.

So be aware of that.

On the other hand i'm guessing that your BB's have wireless ? - perhaps the BBM will work on a home wireless connection?

im actually in the process of trying to get my uk curve handset working. you have to be careful who you go with because some do not support or sell blackberrys at all. i went for a boost mobile sim which is supported by yes optus, but i still havent managed to get my blackberry data sorted out, so am using it for calls and wireless at the momment.
