jackboots
URGENT UPDATE - Shipping Pets Dear PIO & PP members The Australians have now classed UK as Rabies well controlled rather than rabies free. Which means that pets travelling from UK to Australia after Jan 1st 2012 now have to have pre travel rabies work. Pets have to have a rabies vaccination within 12 months of the flight date and a rabies vaccination at least 60 days before the flight, but ideally 6-12 months. They then need a rabies blood sample ideally at least 5 months before their flight date. It can be less than 5 months before their flight date, but they will have to spend longer in Australian quarantine if that is the case. The pets are allowed out of quarantine 180 days after the date of the rabies blood sample or 30 days after they land whichever is the greater. Basically - if you are thinking of going to Australia with your pet, start planning early. If you are planning to go in Jan or Feb next year - either try to send your pet before Jan 01st 2012 or be prepared for pets flight to be delayed or the quarantine stay be extended. I had my dog all ready to fly out on 4th January for a 30-day quarantine period (without having the rabies vaccine)...I then gets a call from my guy at Airpets last week to tell me that my pet needs a rabies vaccine and he could be in quarantine for upto 4 months...so I have changed his quarantine period so that he goes on 19th December, so he doesn't have to have a rabies vaccine!!! Phew, glad that one is sorted out - couldn't let my baby be in quarantine for more than 30 days...that's long enough!!!!

We should be emigrating in January but we havnt recd visa or job contract so I cant book her in with a shipping agent yet. Ive just found out, Perth quarantine is now fully booked until Jan 12. Dont' panic, I haven't even applied for my visa yet but I have still booked in my pooch. I was in the same position last week when I had to change my date for Perth Quarantine and I thought I would have to leave my baby behind, but my pet agent advised that I could book Sydney if Perth was unavailable. Luckily, I managed to get a place at Perth. But, if you are stuck, you could maybe try Sydney and get your pet flown over to Perth once quarantine has ended. There is a company called "Dogtainers" (http://www.dogtainers.com.au) who do domestic flights within Australia for pets - you can get a quote online. Apparently, Sydney quarantine is much bigger than Perth and does not get as booked up as Perth. I know it's more of a cost and your pet will be far away from you, but it is a Plan B!!! Hope this helps

I can also fly to Sydney on staff concessions so this will save a lot of money on my flight from UK & if I fly from Sydney to Perth with amber its approx $200 on virgin australia for a dog. However we now have anther problem, amber had lepo in her anual booster in April.......omg....I feel sick that she is going to fail her blood tests

I hope yours are ok when you get them done. I am taking my dog to the vets on 22ndd November to get his blood tests done! Nerve racking time!!! It is, im getting so stressed about sending Amber & the cost involved, do you know how much it costs for the 30 day quarantine? I think we are emigrating at a similar time to you, we also want to live near Baldivis but will settle for any rental we can find.

You pay this prior to the animal being released. I have settled for Baldivis as I will be commuting to Perth daily and I have heard that Baldivis is very nice and has close links to Rockingham (which is fab, great shopping centre and beaches!). It is also not too far from Mandurah, which I also love. I have sorted out my accomodation as I have heard that rental properties are hard to get hold of as many apply for the same properties at once. Schools seem good too. I will be living near to Settlers Hills Primary School (they also have after school care at Tranby College, which is across the road from the primary school). I can't wait to get out there, just the dog to sort and we will be ready to jump on that plane!!!! Good luck with your move. Maybe we will bump into each other whilst walking around Baldivis! Take care, Michelle.

I think we are emigrating at a similar time to you, we also want to live near Baldivis but will settle for any rental we can find. Hi there, i am transporting my 2 dogs to perth and i hope to settle in Baldivis, i am going to use http://www.Transfuranimals.com the quote was really good, i was very impressed when talking to the chap on the phone as he was very informative and seemed to really care about the pets. I would highly recommend giving them a call. The quarentine at Byford is $39 per day. I was quoted 1,806 to transport my 2 small dogs. I have started the Rabies jabs, they had the first and have 2nd on Tuesday, i won't be over there until next June/July so thank god i heard about it on here otherwise i would never have known until last minute. The first jabs for the 2 dogs were 108 quid so i guess the 2nd jabs will be the same, then there's the blood test, an added expense we don't need at the moment, but hey ho, at least they are protected i suppose. I have heard on here how taking your pets help you all settle quicker and i know mine will love the beach, so it's going to be worth it. So not cheap this emigrating malarky is it? but worth it, i have been going to perth for years so really can't wait to settle down over there. Any other questions pls ask and i will be glad to help if i can. All the best Ann

Geordie Lass
Well, my Charlie was collected from home this morning for his journey to Oz. He has been taken to Heathrow, London for the weekend then he flies out to Perth on Monday. I think I was more upset for him leaving than he was. He didn't seem to mind being placed in a cage in a stranger's van. At least he had his favourite cuddly dog toy with him and his blankies to snuggle up to!!!! Can't wait to see him in 30 days! I hope he will be okay on that long journey?

I am sure he will be fine, but I feel at a loss as he is so much part of the family and the house is so quiet without him. At least when I get out to Baldivis on 6th January I will only have to wait a couple of weeks before picking him up. I would love to visit him when he is in Byford, which Druid kindly advised me about, but would hate to have to come away without him!! Sob! Sob! We thought the same, but after not seeing pooch, then seeing her at Byford for the first time in 14 day days the poor pooch did not know what to do with herself she was so excited to see us, poor pooch must have thought she had been abondoned, we took some kangaroo jerky for her and gave it to her when we left, she was so pre occupied with her chew she didnt even notice us leave, we see her now three times a week now, I think its better to see her than not seeing her, she seems to appreciate the attention and the walk in the pen, the staff at Byford are brilliant. Cant wait for her to get out and we can let her loose on the beach, xmas visiting hours are a bit restricted, so poor pooch is going to have to spend xmas on her own with the other inmates
