82rhoads
Hi all,i'm off to perth shortly to visit family and check out the work situation (i'm a cabinet maker/joiner). My question is, if i apply for the 176 visa will my age (39 = 25 points) be taken into consideration at the time i submit my application, or when it finally gets processed ? I'm 40 next july so might i be cutting it fine regarding the points? I also couldn't see a points value for my trade on the 'sol' list like there used to be...where's that gone? thanks for any advice, Darren
Guest sabyous
Hi Darren, Points will be taken into consideration at the time you submit your application. so you are entitled to get 25 points regarding your age,if you apply well before next July and successfully submit your application. phil
For age, it seems to be generally taken as Sydney local time on the date you apply - check second page at http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/pdf/points-test.pdf Age ranges Eligibility for points is determined by the applicant’s age on the day of making their application Not sure on the SOL, it all changes so often.... But if it helps, there may well still be a State skills list as well as the national one. And when we did ours, we were told that gaining State Sponsorship was a good route to look into (gave extra points I think and got it in a different massive pile at DIAC). Guest sabyous
You are right Phil, state sponsorship is certainly a good route as you required only 100 points to be successful on state sponsorship visa as compared to 120 points in independent category visa. Moreover, state sponsorship gives you priority in visa processing at DIAC as compared to other categories.
82rhoads
Thanks all for the advice. I've just looked at the link Phil gave regarding points, and i didn't know before but you get 10 points by being sponsored by a relative. Perth has just been re-classified so it looks like they can sponsor me. I was thinking i may have to do the ILETS! it appears the points system has changed from where you needed 100/120 to get a visa to 65 across the board. Would state sponsorship be worth applying for as well as a 176? as ss could be a quicker route and add points. Thanks, Darren

StudentInDebt
I maybe mistaken but I think you need to have a read through the latest info, the regional classification for Perth only applies to an employer scheme for nominating foreign nationals. State sponsorship on a 176 visa would give you 5 points, you get nothing for being sponsored by a relative. For a 475 visa your relative will have to live in, and you will have to work in, a regional area (pretty much anywhere in WA except Perth Metro) and you get 10 points. Checkout Booklet 6 for more detail.
Georgiajoemillie
hi darren, i'm in the same boat mate. i'm a plumber looking at perth next year, just started application. been told that if i dont get visa app in by my 40th bday April 2012 i will lose 10 points and have to re sit my IELTS as i got S 9, R 8, W 7.5, L 7.5 and would need all or above 8's. so i am trying to find all my qualifications and get them sent off, and get booked in on my skill assessment. ps, if perth is now regional would that help me if i passed my deadline for a

I'm going through it all now and it seems to me that if you have a close relative in perth they can sponsor you and you can live and work there. It changed recently as before on the eligibility section it stated that perth was not accepted and only gave a few area codes as to wher you could work and live. someone advised me in a previous reply that this wasn't the case but i can't see that it isn't, as it now says 'anywhere' ! Are you getting state sponsorship as well as family to increase the points and was the english test easy enough? cheers
Georgiajoemillie
hi mate, i've never even been to oz before mate, let alone have family over there. i'm applying for a 176, ive got an agent that i've sent off all my qualifications etc. hopefully looking to make the plumbing vetasses skills assessment in london on nov 26th. my deadline is april 18th so need to have wa ss so i can apply for visa. As for IELTS i think i would struggle to get an 8 in writing, i thought i did better thasn 7.5 in listening.Being a plumber i've sat loads of exams since i've left school but found the IELTS quite daunting. loads of practise helps but i really struggle with puncuation and spelling so was happy with the 7.5. hopefully i wont have to re sit and might go down the 475 or 457 ( can't remember which one is regional as i don't think you need s many points and perth is now regional) might be wrong though hope this helps cheers ian

We went as far as up Gin Gin and down to freemantle.Reg areas of living, the prices vary a lot depending on the catchment area for schools, and we saw tons of houses being built on the way to yanchep which was around clarkson, also, mandurah is popular with the brits. It's a very nice place but not sure of the work situation, however they're building a decent train station there (which would suit meadow springs) as the place is expanding so transport needs will be more. What we did realise though is that, what looks close on the map is actually bloody miles away from perth, the public transport is excellent and cheap but a car is essential. Loads of work in the west australian paper though... cheers, Darren
