tomabbie
Just got my IELTS result, speaking 9, reading 8.5, listening 8.5, writing 7.5, overall 8.5. I am I right in thinking because I got 7.5 in writing will only 10 points for my visa application despite getting on overall 8.5. Wish I'd took the general version not the academic one now! have looked on various websites but can't seem to get any clarification as to wether it's your overall score or individual ones. Can anybody help?Kirstie
yorkshirepudding
Hi you need to get 4 7's (under 40) or 4 8's ( over 40) to claim the extra points. I took the general s 9, r 8, l 8.5 w 7.5 which have me a overall 8.

New Life Down Under
Subject to which type of visa you are applying, some require skills assessments witha minimum score of 7 in the academic test, therefore in that instance a general IELTS would not be acceptable anyhow! Maxg
Hi. I think it is the score for each section not the overall score. My OH had to get 8's in each section. He got: S9, R8, W8 L7.5. Our agent still put it in with this.

It is impossible to give appropriate advise without consulting the legislation for each subclass of visa. Good luck with your application! Guest Shelly23
Hi just wanted to jump onto this thread. I have previously sat the Academic ielts and obtained overall 7.5, and am using this for my skills assessment as a nurse. However now need to do again for an overall 8, for more points of the visa cos i'm old. My question is can I just take the general ielts for the visa 176, to get the 20 points. I'm not looking to do any further training in Oz. Does this sound reasonable, is the general one easier??? Thanks in advance.

tomabbie
Hi for a points bump it is the general test you need I'm pretty sure though if you are going for skilled visa and your profession is health, medical, law or teaching (as mine is) it needs to be academic. Hello Shelly Check the legislation for the subclass you are applying for and also check with the Skills Assessment body what they require regarding IELTS. In some instances the minimum requirements for the visa are different from the requirements for the assessing body. IE Some categories of visa may require a score of 6 but in order to apply in your relevant skill you need a score of 7! Every application is different. Good luck, do double check before you apply
Guest sophiesindall
I hope you don't mind me joining this thread but I've a very nervous husband about to sit this test an was wondering just how hard it actually is? He's an experience electrician who has run his own business for many years an easily passed the vetassess. We need 10 points to apply for out 176 visa which I believe is a 7 pass Mark. Think he got a C or D grade in his GCSE english exam (many years ago) an we're hoping it should be ok.....

Hello for GSM points can be awarded for English Language. 10 points for proficient English ie a score of at least 7 in each of the four test components and 20 points for superior English , ie a score of at least 8 in each component. I think there are some practice tests on the IELTS site. Generally English native tongue speakers do not have a problem in achieving an IELTS of 7. Hope that answers your questions! Hi i have just had my results back too, all 9 apart from writing which was 7.5, oooooh so bloody annoyed as this was my 3rd attempt to get 8 in all components. Some agents will put through if their clients only need the 10 points, where as it looks like you and I need the 20 points. Everyone has a different situation, ie are only in their 20's 30's they get more points for their age. There seems to be no easier way if your looking for permanent res without employer sponsorship, thist may be the route you want to try?? Or do the stupid exam all over again. I'm appealing my writing component, as this is the only one you can really appeal, cos I'm certainly not doing the exam again. Good luck with what ever you decide to do
