Piscine75
I have read so many mixed opinions on this. Some say to bring everything as furniture and electrical items are very expensive to buy in Perth and some even recommend buying here and shipping over? Others say that you can can buy cheap over there. Can anyone advise if it is worth shipping the following: Bed and mattress Lockers Dressing Table Sofa Tv Cutlery TableWare Also, are barbecues and outdoor furniture expensive in Perth as we will be going into an unfurnished house. Any advice really appreciated especially from people who have made the move or done a research trip. Looking forward to replies
bensdad
[hi to get a 20' container from the uk to perth its gonna cost approx 5k with insurance this equates to approx $8k aud , we just worked out what we wanted to take then costed the same items new and it was about 500-750 gbp more to buy, so we have decided to spend the extra and buy new when we get there. Guest Ali_M
If you've already got that stuff and you like it enough to pay the shipping costs, then definitely bring it. However, I wouldn't go out and buy stuff especially. There's a whole range of price levels here, just as in the UK, so you can end up spending as much or as little as you like. On BBQ specifically, we're looking at a pretty whizzy looking one from Bunnings (a major DIY chain here), for only $179. Clearly you get what you pay for, but it'll do us for the time being. Like you we have moved into an unfurnished rental. Good luck with you planning!
portlaunay
Hi, we sold just about everything. We bought the wrought iron bedframe we had made for us and a Poul Cadovius shelving system, dining table and chairs that I'd spent years collecting. Those things were just too precious for us to leave behind. We had three year old sofa that we'd bought second hand (we rarely buy any new stuff), which we'd paid £300 for it. The shipping quoted us an extra £600 to bring it and because we knew there is a buoyant market for 50's and 60's furniture it was a no brainer. I guess it depends on what you want when you get here. The £600 to ship our sofa probably would have been worth it if we'd been the sort of people who buy mainstream furniture from a high street retailer but we're not. Since our arrival I've bought the most amazing set of scandinavian, bent ply chairs and table for $100, something that would have cost 10x as much in London. There's also a shop in Freo on South Terrace that sells Chinese copies of classic furniture. I'm not a purest and being able to buy even a repro Charles Eames for a fraction of the cost of even a repro in London is too good to pass up. As for cutlery, well I like to have a drawer of jumbled up, mismatched bits and pieces and Op shops are great for buying cutlery. I bought half a dozen Laguiole knives and forks from an Op shop for $4. I guess it all just depends on what your taste is, whether it's practical for you to wait for the right things to come along or want to go out and buy new straight away.
