Guest Pamela Campbell McGuigan
Hi this is a pretty banal query but here goes. I am trying to buy some plug convertors for our electrical appliances and am getting a bit confused. can anyone tell me if I need to get the 3 pin or 2 pin adapters? I have checked online and been told that Australian sockets take 3 pins but some ebay sellers say I only need the adapter to have 2 pins! Help! ali
Some plugs are 2 pin and some 3 (think most of ours are 2 pin ... but we do have 3 pin ones), they're available in Bunnings
phil
For UK things, if the appliance doesn't need earthing there's still a third pin on the plug, just nothing connected to it. In Oz, if the appliance doesn't need earthing, the plug doesn't have the (unnecessary) third pin. If you buy the three pin plugs you'll be fine, but if you only buy a two pin plug and the appliance needs earthing, you could be putting yourself at risk. All adapters are 2 pin , buy some extension boards over there and change the plug or use an adapter --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=-31.632095,115.702651

Guest Stu
Be careful to get adaptors that can cope with what you will be using them for. We had one melt when it was connected to the OH's hair dryer. I would be careful for hair dryers, clothes dryers, vacuums, anything that draws a lot of power. I would get a few UK power strips, and just fit aussie plugs to them when you get here.
