Guest Sarah66
My husband is considering a job offer to move to Perth with his company. One of our biggest concerns is the education of our two boys 7 and 10 who are both dyslexic. A preliminary trawl through some other blogs has not filled me with comfort. Can anyone advise on how the Australian education system supports dyslexic children? Are there any schools that are known to deal with this particularly well? State v's private? Anyone that I could speak to who has some first hand knowledge in the Perth Area? Many thx

ali
I'm sorry I don't have any knowledge of schools that assist with Dyslexia - perhaps contact a couple of schools - they may be able to point you in the right direction
Guest Cve721
Hi Sarah, I was wondering if you made the move to perth and if so how did you get on with the dyslexia issues? My son is 10 and dyslexic. We have recently arrived in Aus and he will be starting school soon. i am not having much luck getting any positive confirmation that he will get the help he needs. I would really appreciate hearing your experiences. cheers cathy x
Scot01
Govt schools tend not to have the British equivalent of a senco - special needs coordinator and it is up to the class teacher to adapt what they are doing. However this is changing and some of the more needy schools offer some remedial support. Catholic schools are much better and most will have learning support teachers and the big private schools will also have support. Your best bet is to pay for private tuition and choose your secondary school carefully. The dyslexia speld organisation is helpful and provide tutors and you can borrow resources. http://www.dyslexia-speld.com/ Bring every piece of paperwork with you - including a psych report if you have one that gives the diagnosis. He should be eligible for additional time in all tests in school. Where are you planning to move to?
Guest Cve721
We are moving to Secret Harbour and he will be going to Comet Bay Primary- I have spoken to them and they do not offer any extra support. Totally bemused and don't know where to start! i have brought his dyslexia assessment report. My children are baptised Catholics.... If that helps their chances of entering a Catholic school! Any more help/ advice would be much appreciated regards cathy
Guest Cve721
Having researched Comet bay I am now dubious about sending my kids there- have decided to try to get into St Bernadettes primary in Port Kennedy- fingers crossed! Scot01
I don't know either school but my son went from a local govt primary (no help) to a Catholic school which had a fanstastic learning support dept in both the primary and high school (it was k-12 school). He's dyslexic and we're non Catholic so were lucky to get in. We also paid for private tuition. He got extra time in all his exams and was allowed to use a computer for all lessons from year 9 and in his final WACE exams where he passed English by the skin of his teeth! If your son goes to a catholic primary then you should get into the feeder high school as well.
