Hey,

Just sorted shipping but it's a mate who has a removal company hence a very good price. The agreemant is we pack our own stuff. Anyone done this before? Concerned about the whole PBO thingy...:skeptical:

Clarebear, I think the only problem might be that you won't be able to get insurance for your stuff if you pack it yourself. On my insurance, the condition was that it had to be packed by members of a particular packing institution. Ali

Thanks Ali, will look into it. Our mate is going to 'oversee' our packing...my husband has worked for him in the past so has experience in packing lol. As far as shipping company is concerned out mate is doing it and the inventory...

My shipping agent told me QAIS open all boxes marked PBO for inspection, so make sure everything is spotlessly clean, no grass, seeds, mud etc, clean any outdoor stuff including your soles of your shoes with Jeyes fluid (it stinks) if they open the first box and find a spot of mud or blade of grass they will open all the boxes and you could be in for a hefty fumigation charge, also no 'untreated' natural products like cane furniture or wooden ornaments, even things like candles are a no no unless they state they are synthetic wax and not natural bees wax, its a minefield................good luck

Thanks Druid, we have loads of African stuff from many trips to visit rellies in SA. Maybe I should let go of it, it's sad but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do...I'm taking a large oak bench thats antique (no woodworm) do you think that will pose a problem?

We too have loads of African stuff including a 6ft Giraffe from Swaziland, unfortunately it all got to stay, if your oak bench is treated then its ok, if you ship it and AQIS decide that its not treated then you will have to pay to have it destroyed, not having woodworm is not an indication of having been treated, things like kiln dried or pressure treated is what they are looking for, most antique furniture that is highly polished and varnished is ok as at some stage in its contruction would have been treated by the manufacturer, is your oak bench in rough oak form or is it highly polished, stained and varnished?

Rough Oak...should I get it fumigated first? It's precious that is why I want to take it...I would cry if I had to destroy it

If its that precious you might want to think about leaving it with friends here in the UK, its not worth taking a chance, AQIS even check the packing crates the shipping company use for the correct stamps before they let them in, I think there is some form of radiation treatment you can do to ensure the timber is sterile, not sure you will have to google it.

We were told by a shipping company that we had to leave our didgeridoo that we bought from Australia behind in the UK, cause we dont have proof of purchase and that the inside of the didgeridoo will not be treated .... lol x

When we came..we got a 20ft Container..packed all our stuff and loaded the container all ourselves and then shipper collected and shipped it to Perth. We got insurance no problem, 3 of our boxes were opened and checked...nothing seemed even to be disturbed in the boxes! What I did was itemised everything that was in each box. I had a carton full of candles, as I was a partylite agent and wasn't going to leave those behind. That box wasn't even opened. I make soaps and wasn't sure about the scents and colours I had so I rand the Australian Quarantine/Customs and there advice was: until the ingredients list was seen they would not be able to say if they could allow them in...so for the sake of a few pounds I binned the lot abd started again here. For your antique I would ring them and ask..and even if they say you do need it fumigated ask could you have it done and certified in UK beofre you pack it.. or could they tell you the worse scenario cost if they done it and prepare yourself for it. I know sometimes its not the cost of something...its the sentimental reasons..so leaving it in the uk would not be an option for some.

Good luck with the packing and move...it really is not as bad as it seems. I wrapped all my glass, ornaments (I have a lot of beswick) and crockery in news paper!! Not 1 single item got broken!! I ended up I box of photos short and Dyson parts on my electrolux vacuum! (oh and I forgot to empty the hoover before we left the Uk!! and they never picked that up!!)

My shippers were awful I wont go into the details again as I think I have bored everyone enough about it by now, they dont trade anymore so no need to worry. Anyway I packed all the stuff myself in newspaper. I did have two broken plates but that was all, and nothing was opened, we shipped ten boxes and 2 bikes and a tv. The broken plates were my fault I reckon and they were cheap (shouldnt have bothered bringing them really!) Oh and I got insurance no problem too.

How clean do tools such as spanners, socket sets, hammers etc need to be? Do they need to be like new, and what about rust spots? Also power tools, like drill, saw, sander? These are all personal tools not used for work/job. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

We are going to clean them with Jeyes I think, it stinks but I guess that way they can tell they are clean! Not sure about rust, husband is buffing away as we speak...:err:

Tools dont talk to me about tools, I have thousands of them from 3 different continents, been buying and collecting them for 30 years, my wife hates them, my agent says they just need to be clean, no old sawdust or spider webs, any that are 100% rusted need to be binned, small amounts of rust are acceptable, they dont like rusty garden tools coz they cant see if they have mud in the rust :arghh:

Our moving company representative told us to make sure all the shoes were together so the packers can pack them all together to make it easier to go through customs. She also said to make sure all the dirt is off of them. I followed her instructions and spent the day cleaning tools and shoes. Can someone explain to me why AQIS makes such a fuss about shoes that are in your shipment yet they don't do anything or show any concern for the shoes on my feet when I get off the plane in Perth?

We've packed and unloaded a container a couple of times now and have so far had no problems. Just make sure you get the guide lines for each company/country and stick to them, and make sure you wrap, pack and label correctly.

We are using Anglo this time and are loading container this end but they are unloading in Perth.
