Christmas

I love Christmas, I love the run up to it and the actual celebration days. One of the things that I love being here is that we now don't have the endless visits on Christams morning to see relatives, no sooner had the kids opened their pressies ... we were organinsing them to get ready because we had a lot of stops to make for the rest of the day - so a relaxed Christmas day is certainly a bonus.

This will be our 5th Christmas (we've had visitors for some), and whilst it is strange it being warm and sunny - you do start to make new family traditions.

We set the outdoor table for brunch on Christmas morning, we make a fruit platter, pancakes and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with bagals (and bucks fizz). We dip in and out of the pool and play board games at the back of the garden before cocktails and mocktails (for the kids), and eating indoors in the evening and have turkey and ham with the trimmings (my daughter says it's not xmas unless she has her turkey dinner lol).

So how are you going to spend your christmas if you're here in Aus and for those who are making the journey - what do you plan to do for your 1st Christmas here?

That is so true Ali. We are still going to be in the UK for this xmas but can't wait until we can have an xmas like you guys! It sounds so lovely and chilled just how we like it! Do you do the complete xmas dinner that we do here (stuffing, pigs in blankets etc) or do you have a more relaxed version? Xmas morning on the beach or in the pool - such a hardlife! Do you still have all the decorations etc that we have here?

We're going to make this one a quiet xmas here prob visit some family but not too much fuss this time. We did the big family one last year but it turned into an absolute nightmare def made us realise that wasn't our cup of tea! We don't do the cold either so think would adjust quickly to a nice warm xmas!

Still have full dinner, but we have it in the evening and don't get dressed up, shorts, t.shirts and thongs (flip flops). I have to say that i've probably got more decorations now than I did before as the house is larger, we decorate the front and also because we spend a lot of time outside at the back of the house we have lights there too and last year I decided to put a christmas tree outside in the patio too (I'm sure Santa would like me for one of his helpers ... I love speading christmas cheer lol).

I have to say that we moved here in January 2007 after deciding that we would have one last Xmas and we had my dad to stay and invited hubbys family - it was perhaps one of the best times we'd ever had and holds lots of fond memories.

Great thread, thanks, looking forward to reading all the responses for inspiration for our first Christmas here.

We have a friend who's been in Freo for some years and her family are coming over and we've been invited to hers. I fear it will be a trad Brit Christmas and we're just not interested in that.

I've always hated Turkey and the over-indulgence (don't mean to be a Scrooge), so we're hoping we'll be able to have a bit of a seafood feast.

I guess my ideal Christmas would be church on Christmas Eve; we're not churchy but the priest is such a fantastic bloke and a lot of our friends go regularly, there's a really fun atmosphere and always lots of Champers. After that, put the kids to bed and hope they go off before 2am and tuck into the fizz again. In the morning would be nice to get up uber early, pack a breakfast picnic and head to the beach. After some fruit, maybe some croissants, prosciutto and sliced tomatoes we'll head back, open pressies, play with the kids, chill and spend time in the kitchen prepping for the evening as I love cooking. As the afternoon draws on, light the BBQ and get the main event on - lots of fish and seafood. Would be great to have a dozen or so people over to share and when they've all gone and the kids are asleep curl up with my wife and a glass of Lagavulin.

Brill thread Ali, we intend to be in Perth for Christmas this year (house sale permitting) and I have to say I am a tad worried about the logistics...plan to fly out 1st Dec, sort a permanent rental and get the children enrolled in school before they break up!

If all that goes to plan it will be a mad Christmas shopping dash to ensure my 3 children are happy on Christmas morning!

It may be a tad stressfull but believe it will be a happy one, our first in Oz! Bring it on!!!!!!

Awh Ali your Christmas Day sounds lovely. Hopefully next year when we are settled we could do the same but this year it will be our first Christmas in Aus. We will be staying in a short term rental over Christmas (our container wont arrive in time, which has all my xmas decs) I feel sad because I want to make it Christmassy for my two little boys...I was thinking of buying a little Christmas tree to put up in the rental..its gonna be such a strange feeling not being in our own home.

K Mart has some really in expensive trees - I got one for the patio for about $15 with a box of baubles for $10. We've never been to the beach on xmas day (went boxing day the year that Perth was officially regarded at the hotest place in the worl lol).

After years of rushing around, it's so nice to be able to actually relax and enjoy Chritmas day.

Really enjoyed reading about everyones plans for Christmas, this will be our last Christmas in UK, moving to SOR in January, we will be staying with my parents by then so there is going to be lots of tears, but hopefully will make the most of it. My eldest son will be 8 5 days before christmas and he is upset that he won't have any presents for his birthday and christmas as we won't be able to bring anything big, I keep telling him that we will buy presents and toys when we get to Oz but he still isn't happy, so we will have to have another Christmas when we arrive. I love the idea of decorating the back of house wouldn't have thought of that. Enjoy the hot christmas ahead and I we will look forwars to being there soon.

Thought I'd revive this one following a recent Christmas Market thread.

Now I know it's a couple of months away yet but for those new to these shores what will you be planning for your first Christmas in WA and for the more seasoned among us, any changes this year?

Good work Porty. I love Christmas, be it here in the heat or in the Uk in the cold. It isn't quite the same but it's still full on and fun in our house. I cook for all the family, we usually have relies fly in from the Uk to join us. It's the kids day and we spend all morning in pjs ( matching Chrissy pjs) opening pressies, I prepare most stuff on Chrissy eve. Then we eat around 4.00ish full roast turkey and all the trimmings, then it's pool time til well into the warm evening! Boxing Day is my day off and we picnic in kings park....very enjoyable!

Its going to be our first xmas and we are very excited. I think my daughter who 6 will spend most of the day bouncing on her trampoline and jumping in her pool. We are going for a roast - theres only going to be 3 of us so we are going to do a nice ham, salads and BBQ followed by home made welsh cakes with ice cream - as our little girl is going to be spoilt rotten as its the first time we have really been able to afford to do it for her
