Guest Jeri
Hiya Well we have had a quote of £647 to take over all our 'necessities' - no large furniture basically. That means we can bring our tv, carpet, all bedlinen, curtains, kitchen stuff, lamps, heavy clothing ect. and we are really happy as we can surive with all of this and get all the big stuff there. BUT.. question.. I am going mad on the bed linen, curtains, towels ect as I have heard all of this is really expensive in Perth. What else do you recommend.. I've heard cosmetics like 'mascara, eye-liner ' and things like slip slops (sandals), shorts and we are of course including adapters and extentions... but is there anything that you REALLY REALLY WISHED you had stocked up on or brought with you. xx

portlaunay
You're bringing carpet???? And you're hoping to find somewhere you can use your curtains too??? No offence but these seem like very odd things to be bringing, I'm not sure they'd be high on my list of necessities. Don't really miss anything and with Gumtree and eBay you can pick up lots of cheap furniture. We got rid of loads of bed linen and towels and only kept the really good stuff. When we arrived Myer (Department store), had a sale on and we bought a load of bed linen and lovely thick towels for not very much at all. We really really wished we'd stocked up on chocolate. The stuff here has some additive to keep it from melting in the heat and it just tastes grainy and awful. We'd give anything for a bar of Green & Black's right now. portlaunay
Can you get PG Tips tea I'm not sure I've seen any PG but Liptons is mmmmmm. (And to be hoest if you don't drink coffee you may as well just not come. I used to drink gallons of tea in the UK but here, when the coffee is so outstanding, I can't do without at least 3 Long Macc's a day)
Guest Jeri
lol, I will try get some pg tips in. As for the carpet, hubby is saying leave it and i'm pushing for it. Its gorgeous soft, white and thick and expensive and would be perfect for open plan tiled flooring. Thinking of leaving the curtains as it will be a bit of a gamble with the windows but defo bringing all our bedding. Im sure we will be able to get 'supplies' if needed but it will be a real shame getting rid of something just to get there and buy it again. as for chocolate....MY LOVE..... I suppose I should be glad its not as good as I am on a major diet 'as of tomorrow lol'... so it will probably be for the best. We've been watching quite abit of wanted down under and its almost 'surreal' that, that will be us soon. Its gorgeous soft, white and thick and expensive and would be perfect for open plan tiled flooring. Thinking of leaving the curtains as it will be a bit of a gamble with the windows but defo bringing all our bedding. It is hot, dry and sandy here. I'd say your white carpet would turn a red/brown pretty quickly, become clogged with sand and you'd roll it up and delight in the coolness of the tiles below against your feet. I'm not sure I've seen a house with curtains here, you could bring them for novelty factor and while you're at it drag a couple of wagon wheels along for the front of your house and you could really go 'Benidorm Chic' (That's a joke by the way, I really don't mean to offend) as for chocolate....MY LOVE..... I suppose I should be glad its not as good as I am on a major diet 'as of tomorrow lol'... so it will probably be for the best. If you're moving SOR there's a chocolate bar on the Capp Strip in Freo. It serves the most amazing cups of hot chocolate and the chilli spiced one is lovely. It keeps us going! We've been watching quite abit of wanted down under and its almost 'surreal' that, that will be us soon. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKH I know exactly how you feel, I'm really excited for you, this really is the most fantastic place, we really love it. I drive up the Kwinana Freeway into Perth, along the banks of the river and I just can't believe I'm really doing it. I swear people think I'm weird, I grin all the way. It has been a really difficult and challenging journey for us and continues to be so but it's also the most gigantic leap forward in so many ways. Good luck. But if you have it all at home you may as well bring it as it will cost a fortune to replace buying new in oz. I am stocking up on my clothes as i like ' next ' Marks and sparks, our fashion is better i think. But you can buy on line from australia for next and marks & spencer. Phew!! ali
It's unlikely that you will be able to use your carpet and you'd end up sorting it in the garage - unless it's a massive size (and if you're in a rental you won't be able to fit it), and you know the exact measurements of the house you're going to be living in. Curtains again, you may be very lucky to be able to use them.
jackboots
Saucepans a decent set they are well expensive here and frying pans , pyrex dishes etc .. personaly i wouldn't bother with the curtains or carpets either .. but thats me , you never know .. The company is called Sanderstead - John Inkpen. They quoted £647 - there is a £40 admin fee plus VAT, and with the basic insurance ect, So its looking like a grand. Our list was pretty long and we were also rather impressed, as it will definitely be a grand worth using. Let me know how you get on. xx
Guest Jeri
Thanks everyone... I think its unanimous that the carpet and curtains should not be included, and I will then agree, as you all know better than me, and I guess it just means I can get a few more 'needed' things in the shipment. We are fully stocked on the bedding front (will invest in a few winter ones) and I was thinking of the pots and pans situation, so thats good to know. Guest half a dozen
Hi, bring toothpaste! Also blades as in Gillette Fusion or similar if anyone uses them, really expensive here. Also if it's not too heavy and fits, washing powder. I was in England last month on holiday and my washing smelt lovely, washing powder here seems to just smell of hot water! Toiletries here are expensive, as mentioned toothpaste and things like hair gel. Also get your boots no 7 makeup 3 for 2 while you can! Good luck with the move, as said on here, it's a lovely place to live, I also walk round smiling thanking my lucky stars I live in such a fab place

Guest half a dozen
Just had a thought....bring hayfever tablets if any of the family get it as they are expensive too! I brought back goodies with me (choccis etc) when I went over for a holiday last month, I declared them on the landing card and they were fine. The biggy is to declare....when we emigrated I had an apple in my handbag from the hotel in Singapore which I genuinely forgot about but they saw on the xray and Miss Trunchball (!) scared the life out of me in Perth customs! I should have got a $200 on the spot fine but she realised I was a wet behind the ears pom and let me off thank god. Good luck and safe trip! Hello half a dozen and thanks for the help with the mutt, we will deffo get her clipped now, BTW, us pommies dogs have to do 6 months (depends when you have the rabies shot done ) in Byford now, the UK got downgraded on the Rabies free, we are just Rabies well controlled now, all thanks to those jerks in Brussels and the EU, rules change on 1st Jan 2012. Decent 'Non drowsy' hayfever tablets are bloody expensive here too and they go out of date quick, we will take our chances with OTC drugs in Perth, I didnt get hayfever in Perth the last time I was there, so hopefullt the climate change will sort it out. if there is anything legal you want bringing over in our container let us know, shippers are here 22-25 Nov, we fly 28th Thanks for your help, we will have to meet up sometime when we :smile:get there, we have a 17 YO son who is worried, but wants to do it
Guest Suziepops
Hi again My son is soon to be 15 but looks a whole lot older & behaves older, partners son 22, your son has absolutely nothing to worry about, the Aussies are very welcoming and warm, your son will have the best future he could wish for in the best country on the planet, will he be going to college / Uni? What's he passionate about? My lad is into rugby in a big way & is hopeful to start playing very soon, 22 yr old just plays computer games, finds it difficult to socialise, hopefully that won't last. As for hayfever my lad suffered badly in UK having to use persciption nasal sprays & tablets, so far over here he hasn't had any signs of it, must be the climate change. If you have any questions I will do my best to answer them, is your wife on Facebook, we have a special page for perth princesses only & are having our first meet up just before you land but she'll be more than welcome to join and perhaps come to the Ascot races with the rest of us that are already here on the next meeting. Hi Suziepops, we dont do facebook, maybe the wife (Jen) will sign up when she sees this message, I know I am doing the right thing for my lad and he is sensible, so he knows we are doing the right thing, thats why he wants to go, he's bored with life in the UK now with the exception of his girlfriend, but he will adapt and adjust, we just need to keep him busy when we arrive I'm hoping to get him a job with me when I start until he find his calling in life, he wanted to go to a TAFE at jandakot airport to do aircraft engineering, when we enquired they wanted $15000 bucks off us, and thats only the first year, as he will be classed as a overseas student because we are on a 457, we told him to wait until we get PR, I am applying for an RSMS or ENS visa when we arrive, we also have a 21YO daughter who is in her final year of Uni, she wont be joining us until July, she can't wait, she wants to take a gap year when she arrives, no doubt my wife will be along soon to ask you a million questions, me, I just go with the flow, done lots of travelling and emigrated twice now, I was up the west coast for six months working for a mickey mouse airline until it all went pear shaped and I had to leave Oz
Guest Suziepops
Hi Druid The Uk has nothing left to offer us or our children, it's a joke of a country that I detest with a passion, the controlling methods of earnings, taxes, backing wars that should be left alone, corruption, poor education and childcare standards etc, the list goes on. A PR Visa has a lot more benefits for you & your family from college, Uni, employment benefits ( superan etc ) renting & buying, you'll get asked what visa you have many times. If your son works until your PR then he'll at least boost his resume, my lad wants to get into engineering eventually. Hopefully this time will be the last time you emigrate, as for a million questions, I'll be happy to answer what I can or find out the answers if it helps you all. Is your son a sporty guy, rugby, sea sports, cycling, footie?
