Hi we will be moving to Perth next year i hope beginning of March my son is in Pre-K right now here in USA, my question is: if we get there in March can he starts school 2 months later? They will accept him? He will be turning 5 in Jun 2 of 2012. Or we have to wait until next year? And if so what grade he will be starting?

Thanks,

Pablo.

Up to 5 is kindy here and 5 - 6 is pre-primary. Schools are not obligated to take either, it's only when they reach 7 and join year 1 that they more or less have to take them (if you're in the school catchment area). You just have to be lucky or go on a waiting list for state and private schools.

We've found that schools are pretty disinterested unless you're currently living in their area. If you can turn up with proof of address you get a very different reception to the speculative "we'll be moving to the area" type enquiry.

Hope this is helpful

When we were moving we got a very mixed response from school in the area, one didn't reply, one said it would depend on where we were living, whilst the last gave us heaps of information on the school, which year the children would be in and as my daughter was starting year 7 on the local high school. After further correspondence they found my daughter a pen pal who would be in her class and who she chatted to prior to her arrival. It was great
