portlaunay
Having only been here a few months I'm conscious that I probably need to put a little more time in to really know but my first impressions are that this is more than I imagined. We started in Freo and it was the best introduction to Oz, perhaps not the best introduction to Oz life, per se. After a month we had an opportunity to move to the 'burbs. I'm so glad we did it so early on and even more glad that we are now back in Freo, it allowed us to realise very quickly that 6 beds and a pool etc come way, way down our list of priorities. We lasted 6 weeks in Willetton and I can see how some would love it but having to get into my car for anything was depressing. I can see how some may find making friends very difficult. Even with kids to make that aspect of life a little easier it was pretty hard. People drove their kids to school and queued up in the drop off lane and waved goodbye. In 6 weeks I think I spoke to two parents. Freo offers us everything we came here for. We have a small house and no car. We work locally and public transport gets us where we want to go. When we need to head out further we can hire a car. There's a lovely community spirit, a real creative vibe and energy and it's so beautiful. We can walk the kids to school and when it's time to pick up, parents sit and chat in the school grounds while the kids play. I don't miss TV. I guess it just depends on what you want and if people come here for materialistic reasons - more stuff, bigger things - then it's hardly surprising that they head back to the UK, in the great scheme of things that stuff really doesn't matter. Bob All I can say is dont do it, things are tight in the UK and getting worse, VAT is at 20%, income tax is at 40%, then we still got to pay NI, petrol is 1.35/L and thats UK pounds, my wife works for local govt, she has been going through a re-structure and stands to lose 3 pay grades when its all finalised, my lad left school to nothing, no jobs, no apprenticeships, uni fees went up, my daughter leaves uni next year and probably to nothing, huge student loan and no job, on top of all of that you have the sh*t weather to contend with, very little sunshine, basically this country sucks, I have been trying to leave since I returned 10 years ago, maybe this time it is for good
