Guest justine.brooks
Hi My husband has just landed a job in Perth. We have two children ages 7 and 18 months. We're looking to come over in July this year.. Very soon and feel quite unprepared. Found this site really helpful though.. Could you recommend a subburb where we could purchase a property for around aud 400 -450000? What could we expect for our money? Or we may be looking to rent first off. Also I haven't got a job lIned up,but currently work for Thomas Cook in the UK, I am a customer service manager and have 15 years experience in this field. Would love to be able to carry on my career over there. Are there many jobs as travel consultants, and how would I fare for childcare costs? Do you get any sort of tax credits? I could go on forever asking questions, but I'd bore you to death. So any info, please drop me a line, I am quite in the dark at the moment. Guest adenray
Hi Justine Congratulations on your big move. There are many suburbs to choose from in and around Perth. Choosing a suburb you will feel comfortable with really depends on how you want to integrate with the local community, etc. Do you want to live amongst ex-pats, Australians, etc. Properties range in price and you should be able to pick up something within your price range fairly easily. However, to ensure you don't make a rash decision it would be wise to rent first. Perth is growing at an incredible rate and the suburbs are quickly spreading further North. Joondalup will be classed as Perth's 2nd City and has excellent facilities. A local hospital (Joondalup Health Campus), a Police Training Academy, many food and retail outlets, excellent commuting, cinemas, etc.... I could go on. As mentioned in a previous thread, Carramar is very close to Joondalup and has superb schools which are highly sought after - Carramar Primary and St Stephen's High Schools. There is also a day care centre for pre-schoolies. CentreLink/Family Assistance do offer help with childcare costs. It shouldn't be too difficult for you to find a job here should you decide to carry on in the travel business, only last week I noticed a job advert in one of the travel agents in Joondalup. If you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact me. I understand what it is like having to uproot from the UK but I can honestly say that we have been here over 2 years and we haven't looked back. We have a 7 year old daughter who has made many friends and attends Carramar Primary. Send me a PM if you like or email me on adenray_79@hotmail.com. Kind regards, Lorraine
Guest Lainey
Hi Justine, This will more than likely be the best move you've ever made! & you should have no problem getting work as a travel consultant. This is a good time to buy a house as the market is flooded with houses for sale at the moment & a lot of the vendors are dropping their prices, however on not such a good note the rate of exchange is going against you, so what you gain in one hand you loose in another. We've just built an investment property in Tapping & if we sold now we would loose money so we've decided to rent it ou. My opinion would be to rent for 6 months this way it lets you get to know the suburbs, gives you the chance to look at a lot of different houses compare prices & see what you want. Also the housing market over here is going know where at the moment so don't be in a rush the prices shouldn't be any different a few months from now. Hope this helps! Guest suzy+1
Hi Justine, Depends what visa you are coming on as to weather or not you are entitled to family assistance/centre link. Child care costs are approximatly the same as the UK-i currently pay $61 p/day for day care (07.30-18.15) there are often waiting lists for places at daycare. I put my daughters name down on 4 waiting lists and had a place offered after 5 months. But other people have found it easier. Perth is a lovely place where ever you go. Guest justine.brooks
Hi Suzy, Thanks for replying, much appreciated. My husbands arriving on a works sponsored visa, how do we fare for healthcare, child credits other tax credits e.t.c. We're trying to work out if we can have a good standard of living, what would you say would be a good overall income for a family of 4. Without pulling at the purse strings. This is my main concern to be honest, as is anyones's I suppose. Where do you live? Have you been there long? And how's it all going> Cheers Justine
Guest justine.brooks
Hi Thanks for yours advice.. We will be looking to rent first to get our grips with it all. I have been looking at Willetton and Rockingham. Would you reccommend this area or any other for a family. Schooling is important, but it has to be financially viable too. Are these areas expensive, look a little when I looked on realEstate.com. My hubby needs to be in commuting to the airport often, so we need to be in a reasonable distance but not too close to be a nuisance. Another areea is Joondalup. What's your thoughts? Thanks again for your help, Cheers Justine
Guest justine.brooks
Hi Lorraine, Thanks so much, your response has helped no end. This sounds really promising. My hubby needs to be within commuting distance of the airport, how far from joondalup or Carramar wouls it take in the car, or annother form of transport if easier. What do you reccomend? Would I need a second car if we live here, or is transport readily available. Where I live in the Uk, transport is horrific, so this a big issue for me. What sort of rent would we be looking at for a 4 bed house. You have been so helpful, glad you settled in and doing great.. All the best, Justine
Guest Lainey
Hi Justine, We live in Ocean Reef which is approx 5-8mins from Joondalup, I think Joondalup, carramar is a great area however it is quite far from the airport approx 1hr drive. If you were living in Joondalup or surrounding areas you would get away with 1 car as the public transport system is great however I dodn't know about using it to get to the airport so I would say your hubby would need to take the the car. In summer it gets hot to walk about so 2 cars would come in useful( although not a must!) The schools in Joondalup/Carramar area are very good! rent for a 4bedroom 2 bathroom will range from around $350- $420 per week. The norm is to pay a bond of 4 weeks rent plus pay 2 weeks rent in advance. I can't give you too much advise on south of the river, we did have friends living in the Rockingham area (Shoalwater) they weren't that keen & have since moved but that's not to say it's a bad area they just weren't that happy there. Not that I want to confuse you Justine but check with the visa that you're coming over on (because you mentioned sponsored) that you can buy a house straight away or if you would need to buy as an overseas investor, as this would prevent you from getting the 1st home owners grant! Sorry to have thrown that in but the more you know the better equiped you will be!
