piccolo
My OH's potential new employer is willing to sponsor us and she says she has looked into it and she thinks we should apply for a RSMS visa instead of a 457. As the RSMS is a PR visa, I'm just wondering is it better to have PR or to have a temporary visa and avail of LAFHA??? Considering that we aren't sure whether we will be staying forever, we don't know that a PR visa is right for us. Also, she has said to let her know if we need paperwork from her! I'm confused because from what I've read, it's the employer who has to start the ball rolling on a RSMS visa by nominating the occupation? Also, the job offer he received was over the phone and he hasn't received anything in writing. She said she would look into what visa would be best for him and get back to him but there's been no mention of sending him a contract with his terms or anything. He doesn't want to be pushy about it as it's all by email. Any advice?
Guest Aussie Bound
Hey there I think you are better getting the PR its yours once you get it and your OH can get whatever job he wants then, SS is the best way the employer is right but you need to be very direct with employer after all there are lots of jobs on offer over there also there is an expo on at the RDS this w/end your OH may feel better talkin to employers face to face good luck
piccolo
ya thanks, we're going to the RDS this weekend alright. How do you mean we need to be very direct, by asking for a contract is it?
Guest Aussie Bound
ya thanks, we're going to the RDS this weekend alright. How do you mean we need to be very direct, by asking for a contract is it? Yes just ask her is it an offical offer of employment and can she put it in writing and you'll soon see how serious she is. piccolo
ok thanks, will do. It's difficult not to come across as pushy but we do kinda need to know! It's a big move and decision after all. OH actually had phone call from another company last night, same story....wishy washy offer...they don't seem to be very direct or something! He's passing him over to his admin girl to sort out visa requirements etc.....didn't mention money or anything!
Dazling Daz
Hi piccolo Take the RSMS option. Permenant residency will allow you to get all the benefits that a temporary visa does not give you. Just because you get the PR visa it does not mean that you have to stop. Daz
piccolo
Hi Daz, can you clarify what you mean about "it does not mean you have to stop".....stop what?! Sorry, just didn't quite understand your post!
Dazling Daz
You do not have to stop in OZ if you do not like it.
piccolo
oh right! Sorry, lost in translation as I'm Irish so we don't really say "stop" meaning "stay" if you get me!!
Gollywobbler
H Piccolo With any of the employer-sponsored visas, DIAC have to see something that looks roughly like a "contract of employment." The last such document that I saw had more in common with gibberish than anything else but it had been submitted by a Registered Migration Agent (one who was definitely illiterate about basic Contract Law and I wasn't persuaded about whether the Agent could read & write English himself but DIAC had accepted this dog's dinner of a document, all the same.) I agree with DAZ and the prospective employer. I'd choose the RSMS option in your shoes. Gill

It is far better than the mange-ridden thing favoured by the UK Border Agency, in my view. RSMS = Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme, which is one of the possible visas for a prospective new immigrant who is to be sponsored by an Australian employer: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/skilled-workers/ http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/skilled-workers/visa-permanent.htm What is your occupation, please? I assume that you are thinking of migrating to West Australia? Cheers Gill
Nuala
Thanks Gill for responding I've been working in the community and voluntary sector in Cork, Ireland for over 10 years now and I have a B.Soc.Sc Youth and Community work honours degree - I've experience of working in Advocacy (citizen information), Family Support, Community Development, Youth Work, Disabilities, Social Housing Estate Management and I'm also coming from an administrative / accounts background. I'm currently finishing a Masters Degree in Third Sector Management in University College Cork (June 2012), I'm going to be 50 next year so I understand it would be better to apply now, I'm single with no dependants. I'm enquiring about the RSMS scheme as I believe this is the best type of visa for me to apply for in order to work in WA for a couple of years - is this the type of information you can give me or can you direct me to where I can get this information. I'd really appreciate if you would let me know if this sector of employers participate in the RSMS scheme
