Crohn's Disease

Hi all :smile2:

This is my first post, although i've been reading the forum for some time now.

I've just been made an offer of permanent employment on a 457 visa with a firm in Perth. They are gonna start the Visa application process for me next week, but I know I will have things to do too!

I suffer from Crohn's, and am on quite expensive medication for this, although I only receive this medication 6 times per year (total cost of meds in oz is approx $3000 per year i think).

Does anyone have any tips for the Visa process, taking into consideration my Crohn's? I have read of some people being refused a visa because of suffering from it, but i think these were permanent visa's, not temporary ones. I have asked my current treatment centre for a letter, to take to my medical on the UK. Will this be enough information does anyone know?

I'm still a little bit scared that I will be turned down for a visa because of my crohn's, but I hope it's going to be ok!

Hi and welcome.

All I can tell you is that we didn't have to submit any medical information for our 457, all they wanted was proof of our medical insurance.

Hi all (again) :smile2:

Just to update, I've been told i will need a medical as part of the 457 process, because i disclosed that i had Crohn's disease. I'll provide an update once I find out how things are going to pan out.

If there are any other Crohn's sufferers out there I'd be really happy to hear from you.

Cheers,

Tom.

OK, another update :smile2:

Have found out that to receive the exact same treatment in Oz as I receive in the UK for free, this would cost me approx $30k-$40k per year.

This has obviously put a major dent in our plans to move out - currently trying to work things out but am worried this might be the end of our emigration dream. Seeing my specialist soon to see if there is other medication which I could move onto, which won't cost me so much in Oz.

I'll keep updating this just in case it helps out anyone else in the future. I know I have found it really difficult to find out any info regarding Crohn's treatment on a 457 Visa.

Bye for now :smile2:

Cheers bud. Luckily I don't suffer from it as badly as a lot of folks out there.

How do you find the treatment you receive in Oz? Are you are permanent res or temp?

UPDATE.

Our plans to move to Perth are officially off, because of my Crohn's Disease.

I've seen my specialist who has suggested I might have surgery to remove affected section of large intestine. Also being put on a more frequent dose of very very expensive medication, so have shelved plans to move out for the time being, and instead I am currently thinking how lucky I am to receive all of this for free on the NHS.

I'm 32 now, so we've got time on our sides and hopefully in a few years me & Mrs H might decide to make the move, but for the time being I am putting my health first and continuing the excellent treatment I receive on the NHS, rather than paying $thousands and $thousands for the same treatment on Oz.

Like you say, you have time on your side.

Obviously your health is of paramount importance. Good luck in the future, dude, I wish you all the very best, hopefully PP will hear from you again in a few years time but for now, stay safe and well, Perth will still be here for you when you're well.
