Guest ashlu
Hi, I was wondering if anyone here had experience of looking or gaining a job as a programmer in Perth/surrounding areas. We are in the process of applying for permanent residency and was wondering if any one had any views or experience in this area? Main areas C#, MSSQL 2005, 2008 JQuery, JavaScript TFS and Visual Studio. Passed the skills assessment and just waiting to to the IELTS test at the end of March. Thanks in advance. bpremji
Hi Ashley, Have a look on http://www.seek.com.au there seems to be jobs out there but you'll find that not many agencies will want to deal with you until you have PR and are in Australia. Ive managed to get in touch with a few agencies through seek and then LinkedIn. As I'm due to be in Perth in August most of them have said contact them abut 6-8 weeks before I'm due to arrive. Hope that helps. Bharat
Guest ashlu
Thanks Bharat, what area do you work in? Are you going to look for a job once you are in Perth? I have a 17 month old and another girl due in May. I was really hoping I could secure a job before coming out? Do you think there is much possibility of this? Thanks again. bpremji
Hi Ashley, I mainly work with CRM systems, for the past couple of years I've been working with Microsoft Dynamics CRM so have done a bit of JScript and C# but prior to that I did a lot of work with MS Access and SQL Server and have some experience in BI...SSRS and SSIS. Yeah I'm going to start looking properly once I'm there but as I said I've started looking on seek and sending my CV recruitment agencies and as I have an arrival date they seem to be interested but they all say it's too soon to start putting me forward for vacancies they have. I have 2 young boys, 6 and 2, we are all going over in August for 2 weeks then they are coming back and I'm staying to try and secure employment and get a rental,car..etc...hopefully I can have things sorted for them to come over in Dec/Jan ready for the new Oz school year for my oldest. Unless you have a really niche skill I don't think there's much chance I'd securing employment from here but saying that you may be able to get Skype interviews with companies/recruiters and hit the ground running as soon as you land in Perth. What part of the UK are you from and are you on LinkedIn, if so feel free to PM me your details and I'll add you onto my LinkedIn and introduce you to some of the recruiters I'm in touch with in Perth. Guest Parry
Hello Bharat / Ashley, I'm also due in Perth by August / September this year (2012). I got my PR recently, but winding up from here (USA) will take some time, so I thought August / Sept will probably be a good time for me. I've been reading a lot and it seems like the main IT market is on the East coast (Melbourne / Sydney). I've read that there aren't much IT companies in Perth. Do you know if that is true ? Also, any idea which skills are in demand in Perth ? I'm currently in US on a visa, and I hate being on a visa, there are too many restrictions. That is the reason why I got a PR for Australia. I've read a lot of mixed reactions from people about living in Australia. There are people who absolutely love that country and then there are others who keep nagging about each and every thing... I have a 3 yr old and will have to look for areas that have good Primary schools and not too far from the city. Getting very, very nervous... bpremji
Hi Parry, Have you been to Perth before?...I wouldn't take too much notice of what other people say as you will always get people who like/dislike a place for whatever reason. You have to experience it yourself to be a 100% sure.... As I said to Ash, the best place to start is by looking at seek.com.au and see how many vacancies appear under the skills you search for...from my experience (albeit very limited) there does seem to be more jobs on the East Coast (Sydney/Brisbane) but thats to be expected as the populations over that side are much bigger. I've has a positive response from recruiters in Perth who said they are interested in seeing me closer to the time of my move to Perth. Regarding schools, I'm not too sure, but from what I gather a school has to take your child if your in the catchment area (maybe I have this wrong), so your best bet is to try and find nice areas in Perth, are you looking at NOR or SOR? Hi Parry, After posting here and chatting to Bharat I myself contacted a few agents and Perth and had a good response. I emailed one agency after looking at a few groups on LinkedIn (which I would sign up to if you haven't already) and had a phone call the next day. From what he said its very unlikely to get a job offer before you go out, you need to be in Perth. He said to keep in contact and keep him updated on when I would be going out, 8 weeks notice and he would line me up with some interviews which I found very postive. The east coast does seem to be the place for IT related jobs but with the mining sector picking up there seems to be alot more on offer. As for Perth I've never been, saying that I've never been to Australia. We found that Perth seems to be very good for families etc and the climate is great which is a bonus. I've been following this blog for a while now, its man called Bob who moved to Australia from the UK. He gives his account of moving and whats on offer and what to do, prices to spiders and snakes. Covers all sorts : http://www.bobinoz.com/blog/ I'm still in the early stages but fingers crossed. Also, how long did it take to process your PR application once you submitted it? From what I have read most people have moved north of Perth, we've been looking at a place called Secret Harbour which looks really nice. BUt is a fair trip in to the city.
