bluecob99
Another quick question for the wise ones of Perth Poms - Can anyone recommend a good satnav over in Australia (easy to use and not too expensive please)!? Where could we buy it fairly soon after we arrive so that we can start our travels? Thanks very much!

If you don't have an iPhone I can't recommend because we just used the UBD Mapbook when we arrived.
Guest Ali_M
Hi, we've just bought a NavMan MyEscape although at $600 it was not one of the cheapest on the market! We bought it because it has 4WD tracks on it, as well as all the standard stuff. Also a large screen and apparently very robust. However, you can get them for as little as $150 I think. We got ours in JB Hi Fi at Whitfords Shopping centre, but you can get them all over the place. Ali
PerthPomToBe
I cant remember the name of mine but sure it is a tom tom and it is brill. We got ours from JBHiFi and it was a great deal, you can haggle the price down with those guys too.

Must remember to check this site before making another significant purchase! Ali

Just ask them "is that the best price for cash". $600 on a Satnav, we have been from Exmouth to Albany in our 4WD with just a $25 map! Admin
Buy most of our electronics gear at JBHiFi and as has been mentioned above, you can nearly always negotiate a better price. I've had 3 or 4 satnav's since I've been here, TomTom's and Garmins. Personal preference would be Garmin as I've found the accuracy to be better. To be honest, hardly use satnav any more though, more convenient to use a satnav app on my iphone when required (Sygic Australia).
Guest Ali_M
Actually thinking about it, another cost effective solution, if you already have a sat nav in the UK is to simply purchase the Asutralian map and up load that. We did this and it worked fine, and from memory cost no more than £50. It was an ancient TOmTom which sadly has now expired, hence the purchase of the new gadget mentioned above. PerthPomToBe
$600 is a bit extreme for a satnav and im sure you could have haggled them down a bit. When we first arrived we went and got the satnav and a digital camera at the same time and they knocked about $150 off for us with a bit of bargaining. You can haggle with pretty much all the stores here as they all work on commission. We also managed to get 25%, over a $1000 off our furniture package by playing 2 rival stores against each other, the stores are the same and have the same name but just in different locations. I have become really good at haggling here which is something I could do in the uk. Every penny is a prisoner!! lol Bev
jackboots
We have two satnavs ... by default , but we use a map the most .. satnavs great for door to door but prefer the maps for getting to area's , get a decent one from the newsagents the Perth subburbs one and use your phone i say .. JaynBev
Either goodguys or JB Hifi (JB's website is good to. Another option is your local Target as they can be cheaper too. I'm using a Nuvi and as I'm a rep working round the whole Perth metro have found it fantastic so far. There is an app on the iPhone called NavFree (I hope thats right) which gives you a free satnav & thats pretty good too as a start point.
